Every eye in the room swung toward the entrance. Triny’s heart hammered against her ribs as she looked over wondering if Sebastian was with them. A group of people stepped in each looking more polished and elite than the last.
Uriel walked in arm-in-arm with Avery followed by Jared Ruby Foster and Ariana.
“The whole Whitmore family is here. I have not seen them all together like this in years.”
“You did not know? After Avery broke ties with the family he moved to Murica. The woman with him is his wife the sole heiress to the Austine Financial Group. Their son Sebastian has inherited the title now.””
“Avery has not aged a day. He is still as handsome as ever. No wonder that Lindt girl was so obsessed with him back then. It caused such a massive scandal.”
“It was a mess. Word is the reason Avery cut ties with the Whitmores was because someone from the Lindt family pushed him to the edge. Everyone in Kingston’s high society knew about it but people have short memories.”
Triny stood in the crowd a cold smirk touching her lips as she listened to the talk about Renee. She had not realized her aunt had been so desperate for a man. It was a good thing she was wearing this face otherwise Sebastian’s parents probably would not have given her the time of day.
She felt a flicker of disappointment when she realized Sebastian was not in the group but her nerves settled slightly.
She knew Lilian had only spent a short amount of time with Avery and Uriel so there was no way they would see through her. As for the rest of the Whitmores they were even less of a threat. She forced a sweet dutiful smile and walked toward them.
“You are here.”
Uriel blinked appearing momentarily taken aback before she managed a smile. “Lilian you arrived so early.” Her brow furrowed slightly. She had only met Lilian a few times but she had never seen her look quite so fawning. She was not sure if the girl had always been this way or if something had changed.
“Tonight is a big deal” Triny said her voice smooth and overly polite. “I did not want to be late since I am the hostess. Sebastian is swamped so I thought I would get here early to help out. I would hate for anyone to think our family has no class.”
Triny did not know exactly how Lilian and Sebastian acted behind closed doors but she figured playing the part of the devoted helpful partner was her best bet with Uriel.
Uriel’s frown deepened and her smile turned thin. “That is very thoughtful of you. I am sure Sebastian would be touched to know you are worrying so much on his behalf,”
“You are too kind. As his fiancée it is the least I can do” Triny replied ducking her head with a shy modest look.
Uriel’s expression grew distant. “Well I will not keep you. Avery and I have some friends to catch up with so we will be moving along.” She took Avery’s arm and walked away without looking back.
Something is off. This Lilian is nothing like the girl I met before. I have seen her a few times and while she could be gentle she always carried herself with a certain strength and elegance. Today that is gone. This version is nothing but a flatterer desperate to please. It feels wrong. Is this who the girl really is when the masks are off? The thought made Uriel’s brow knit together in a tight knot.
