Chapter 148: The Winning Bid
Ethan approached the pair standing near the auction hall’s entrance, his eyes briefly scanning the man beside the girl. A flicker of surprise crossed his face—when he first arrived, he had noticed Lilian deep in conversation with someone, which prompted him to walk over. But he hadn’t expected it to be Jacob.
“So, it’s Mr. Jacob. It’s been a while,” Ethan greeted, a hint of warmth in his voice.
Jacob returned the greeting with a composed smile, his expression calm yet carrying a subtle distance. “Indeed, it has been some time.”
After exchanging a few courteous words, Ethan turned his attention to Lilian, his smile softening. “Have you seen the bidding results yet?”
“Not yet. What about you? Did you manage to win anything?” Lilian replied, her tone light but curious.
“My assistant is checking now. I haven’t seen you around the venue these past couple of days—I thought you might have already left,” Ethan said, his eyes reflecting a mix of concern and interest.
Nearby, Nancy watched the scene unfold, her gaze fixed on the man standing next to Lilian. His refined features, combined with an undeniable air of authority, made it clear he was no ordinary person. Even Ethan was showing him respect, which only heightened Nancy’s jealousy. The realization stung sharply—this man’s background must be even more impressive than Ethan’s.
How could Lilian be so fortunate? Not only was Ethan so attentive to her, but now this mysterious man seemed to know her well too. Nancy’s mind raced with bitter thoughts. That cunning little fox—beautiful, sly, and utterly manipulative.
Her fists clenched tightly at her sides, knuckles whitening as she stared daggers at Lilian’s radiant face.
Standing beside Ethan, Nancy forced a polite smile and spoke sweetly, “Ethan, aren’t you going to introduce me?” She extended her hand toward Jacob, her tone carefully polished. “Hello, I’m Nancy. My father is the chairman of Yunkai Group. May I know your name?”
Jacob gave her a brief glance, his face tightening slightly at the overpowering scent of her perfume. Without returning her handshake, his expression turned cold as he looked back to Lilian. “Let’s go. The results should be out by now.”
Nancy’s smile faltered. She hadn’t anticipated such a dismissive response. Despite mentioning her family’s influential company, Jacob hadn’t even spared her a second look. She shot a resentful glare at Lilian, anger boiling silently within her. This was all that girl’s doing—if it weren’t for her, Jacob wouldn’t have treated her with such disregard.
Sometimes, Nancy couldn’t help but marvel at the twisted way her own mind worked.
Lilian glanced at her watch, then nodded in agreement. “Let’s check the results.”
