Chapter 15: Taking Your Time
Lillian remained in a haze, her thoughts swirling aimlessly until Sebastian’s voice cut through the fog, pulling her back to the present moment. Instinctively, she asked, “Sebastian, have we met before?”
He arched a brow, a hint of amusement flickering in his dark eyes. “What do you mean by ‘before’?”
Noticing the teasing sparkle in his gaze, Lillian quickly shook her head, dismissing the strange notion. Her eyes drifted down to the small blanket draped over her. “I don’t remember sitting on this couch. Could I have been sleepwalking?” she murmured, uncertainty lacing her voice.
Sebastian’s gaze softened as he looked at the girl who had just awakened. Captivated, he rose and approached her, gently running his fingers through her long hair before lightly pinching her cheek. “Stop overthinking. Go freshen up and get ready for dinner,” he said softly.
Lillian nodded quietly, standing to leave, but then, as clarity returned, she paused and asked, “Sebastian, how did I fall asleep like that?”
He took her hand and led her toward the bathroom. “Lillian, don’t be so hard on yourself. Maybe you were just exhausted. You were already asleep when I came downstairs,” he explained calmly.
Though she eyed him with some suspicion, Lillian chose not to press further. After washing up, the two of them made their way to the dining room.
The butler approached with a respectful bow. “Mr. Whitmore, would you care for dinner now?”
Sebastian nodded and turned to Lillian. “What would you like to drink?”
“A glass of water is fine,” she replied simply.
The meal passed quietly, without any awkwardness or tension. Once they finished, Sebastian instructed Conrad to escort Lillian back to her apartment.
He understood that earning her trust wouldn’t happen overnight; he needed to be patient and let things unfold naturally.
Picking up the blanket Lillian had used, he headed toward the stairs. The butler, observing Sebastian today, noticed a change. The usually reserved man seemed more alive, especially when he gently lifted the sleeping girl from the sofa. A subtle smile touched the corners of his lips, as if he were holding something precious and irreplaceable.
