By the time Lillian finally finished handling her company affairs, the new semester had already been underway for more than a week. The school was bustling with energy, but she had only just returned to the familiar halls she had been away from for so long.

Her homeroom teacher, who had long since grown accustomed to her frequent absences, barely commented on her return. After all, Lillian consistently secured the top spot in every exam, so her presence—or lack thereof—was hardly questioned.

As she stepped onto the campus grounds, the atmosphere shifted subtly. Groups of students whispered quietly, their eyes darting toward her with a mixture of curiosity and something else she couldn’t quite place. Her brow furrowed slightly. Did I walk in with some kind of spotlight on me today? Or maybe there’s something on my face? she wondered, a flicker of irritation crossing her mind.

Before she could dwell on it further, a sudden, firm clap landed on her shoulder. A bright, cheerful voice rang out beside her.

“Lillian! You finally showed up to school!” Natalie exclaimed, practically bouncing with excitement.

Turning her head, Lillian spotted Natalie and Jill standing nearby, both wearing mischievous grins. She let out a resigned sigh.

“Are you two trying to give me a heart attack?” she asked, half amused, half exasperated.

Jill chuckled, looping her arm through Lillian’s. “We’re just having a little fun. Natalie’s got the spirit of a child, you know.”

Natalie didn’t hesitate to grab Lillian’s other arm, her laughter light and infectious. “Exactly! We just wanted to give you a bit of a scare. You ditched us the entire break, and now you come back a full week late. What did you expect?”

Lillian nodded, her expression turning mock-serious. “Alright, you’ve got me there. I accept my punishment.”

Their shared laughter echoed across the courtyard, the tension melting away as the three friends enjoyed the moment.

Suddenly, Natalie’s expression shifted as she remembered something important. She leaned in closer, her voice dropping to a conspiratorial tone. “Oh, and guess what? There’s a new transfer student in our class. She’s insanely popular—like, she might actually steal the crown from the school belle. Lillian, you better watch your back.”

“A transfer student?” Lillian asked, curiosity piqued.

Natalie sighed dramatically. “Beautiful, well-connected family, and everyone in the Solara elite circles is buzzing about her arrival.”

Lillian glanced at her friends, a faint smile playing on her lips. “Alright, enough with the gossip. Let’s not waste energy on rumors. We should get to class before we’re late.”
