Chapter 178: At the Hospital

By the time Sebastian arrived at the hospital, his grandfather had already been transferred to the intensive care unit. The sterile, cold atmosphere of the hospital corridor weighed heavily on him as he hurried inside.

In the small, dimly lit ICU room, Jared sat quietly beside the bed, his face etched with worry. Foster was sprawled on the nearby sofa, absorbed in a game on his phone, though he glanced up briefly when Sebastian entered. The tension in the room was palpable.

Lowering his voice, Jared spoke with a hint of sadness, “When your grandpa was taken into surgery, he kept calling out your name. It was like he just wanted to see you one last time—maybe he was scared he wouldn’t get another chance.”

Sebastian approached the bedside slowly, his eyes scanning the frail figure lying there. The old man’s complexion was ghostly pale, drained of the usual rosy warmth, and he seemed noticeably thinner, as if the illness had stolen his vitality.

Jared continued, trying to reassure him, “It’s not as dire as it sounds. At his age, health issues come and go. Thankfully, they got to him just in time. The doctors said if he rests quietly and doesn’t stress himself, he should pull through.”

Sebastian nodded thoughtfully, then sank down next to Foster on the sofa. His eyes met Jared’s as he asked, “Grandpa has always been strong. How did he suddenly get so sick this time?”

Jared sighed, his expression heavy with concern. “Truth is, he hasn’t been in the best shape for a while, but he didn’t want you to worry, so he kept it from you. This time, it’s mostly because of Elsa. She’s not young anymore, and your grandpa was worried about her future. He tried setting her up on blind dates, but she didn’t like any of them. They argued fiercely, and the stress was too much—he collapsed.”

Foster immediately jumped in, his voice defensive but weakening at the end. “My sister already has someone she cares about. Of course, she wouldn’t be interested in any of those guys. You just don’t approve.”

Jared’s face darkened with disdain. “How could someone like that be good enough for your sister? He’s just a struggling painter—what kind of future does he have? If Elsa marries him, she’s throwing her life away.”

“That’s art, and from what I hear, he’s already gaining some recognition. Maybe in a few years, he’ll be famous. You’re just blinded by your own pride,” Foster retorted, frustration evident in his tone.

Jared sneered, “A few years? He could spend twenty years trying and still end up with nothing. Famous? Don’t make me laugh. Just stop. Convince your sister to forget this nonsense before it’s too late. I’ll never agree, not even if I die.”

Foster fell silent, retreating back into his game, the tension between them thickening the air.

Jared let out a heavy sigh, the weight of the situation settling over him.

Sebastian leaned back against the sofa, his mind racing. “If it’s too much for you, give me the details of this painter. I’ll look into him. If this keeps turning into fights, Elsa will only become more rebellious.”

Jared nodded, a hint of helplessness in his eyes. He never imagined his usually compliant daughter would be so stubborn.

Since his grandfather wasn’t expected to wake up anytime soon, Jared suggested Sebastian and Foster head home while he stayed behind to keep watch.
