Chapter 208: Saving Layla
Lillian gazed down at the bustling street far below, her face composed and unwavering. “Are you truly set on jumping?” she asked gently. “Because once you take that step, there’s no turning back. There’s an old saying—nothing is ever truly finished until the very last second. You’re only thirty years old; you still have the chance to begin again. But if you leap now, every opportunity ends right here, right now. Are you absolutely certain that’s what you want?”
Layla let out a bitter, almost mocking laugh that echoed faintly in the crisp air. “Start over? With this shattered, barely living body? I’m just dragging out the last scraps of a life that’s already broken.” Her voice was heavy with despair.
Lillian met her gaze steadily, her voice calm but filled with quiet determination. “What if I told you I could heal you?” she said. “I practice traditional medicine—I can help you recover, truly recover. And I can help you get what you want: revenge, justice, making every person who’s ever hurt you regret it deeply. Given that chance, would you still want to jump?”
The decision was now Layla’s alone. Lillian had extended a lifeline, a fragile thread of hope. It was Layla’s choice whether to grasp it or let it slip away.
For a brief moment, Layla found herself caught in the warmth of the fire burning in Lillian’s eyes, a flicker of trust kindling inside her heart. Without thinking, she took a tentative step forward. But suddenly, her foot caught on the edge of the ledge; her body lurched backward, and before she could react, she was falling. A chorus of screams erupted from the crowd below.
Every moment of this terrifying scene was being broadcast live by reporters stationed on the ground. The entire city watched, breath held, as the drama unfolded in real time.
Meanwhile, at Empire Group’s towering headquarters, inside the sleek, glass-walled president’s office, Sebastian was midway through a meeting with several senior executives. Suddenly, Foster burst in, urgency written all over his face. He hurried straight to Sebastian’s side and whispered something in his ear.
The room fell silent as Sebastian’s face drained of color. Without a word, he snatched up the remote and switched on the enormous TV screen mounted on the wall. The executives exchanged confused glances; none had ever seen their boss like this before. Slowly, their eyes turned toward the screen.
On the live feed, a figure lunged forward. Sebastian’s face went pale as the girl was caught just in time. His tightly clenched fists relaxed little by little.
Without uttering a single word, Sebastian grabbed his jacket and strode purposefully out of the room.
“The meeting’s over,” Foster announced quickly, turning to the others before following him out. The executives were left behind, stunned and bewildered.
