Chapter 211: A New Beginning
Layla gazed thoughtfully at the young woman before her. There was an undeniable strength in her smile—a resilience forged through hardship. Looking back, Layla couldn’t deny her own role in arriving at this point. She had sacrificed herself entirely for someone else, and that was a mistake she now deeply regretted.
“He used to mean everything to me,” Layla murmured, her voice heavy with sorrow. “For him, I turned my back on my parents, the only people who ever truly loved me. Because of my stubbornness, they passed away carrying bitterness in their hearts. I convinced myself that all I did for that man was worth it, but my blind pride and arrogance only dragged me down into darkness. Now, I have nothing left. Maybe this emptiness is the punishment I deserve.”
Lillian shook her head gently, a soft smile playing on her lips. “Maybe it’s not punishment at all. Perhaps it’s your salvation. If none of this had happened, how would you have ever seen the truth about the man you were so determined to choose? Whether he was truly a man—or a monster. As long as you’re alive, there are endless possibilities ahead. Including the chance to make those who hurt you pay what they owe.”
Layla nodded slowly, her eyes reflecting a flicker of hope. “You’re right. If this hadn’t all happened, I might never have realized whether the people closest to me were human… or devils in disguise.”
For the first time, gratitude washed over Layla’s heart. She was thankful simply to be alive. Everything she had endured had opened her eyes to how foolish she had been before. Had she died, there would have been nothing left of her at all.
When Lillian looked at her again, the despair that had once clung to Layla was gone, replaced by a calm determination. “Don’t worry about your body,” Lillian said with quiet confidence. “I will help you heal. But if you want revenge, you have to listen to me. You can’t gamble with your life. I won’t treat someone who’s intent on dying. And those people who hurt you? They’re not worth losing yourself over. The first step is learning to value yourself.”
Layla’s eyes filled with resolve as she nodded. At this moment, Lillian was her last hope, her final lifeline. When everything else was lost, there was nothing left to fear. That was why she trusted Lillian completely. Even if, in the next moment, Lillian chose to end her life, Layla wouldn’t resist.
Since Layla still had to attend school, staying in Kingston wasn’t an option. Lillian decided to bring her back to Solara. Leaving Kingston behind was probably the best thing Layla could do.
