Chapter 224: The Faded Photograph
Within the vast expanse of a grand estate, in one of its most secluded bedrooms, an elderly man lay quietly in bed while a group of medical professionals moved swiftly around him, conducting a series of urgent tests. Nearby stood three young individuals accompanied by a woman.
Two of the young men caught the eye immediately—one possessed sharp, refined features paired with an air of polished elegance, while the other exuded a darker, more enigmatic charm that was equally captivating.
Beside them stood a young woman, impeccably dressed, her delicate and lovely features framed by a soft, innocent expression that lent her an almost fragile, ethereal beauty. There was something about her presence that instinctively stirred a protective feeling in those around her.
Once the examinations concluded, the doctor stepped forward and handed the report to the man standing closest. “Mr. Eric, there’s no serious cause for alarm regarding Mr. Merrick’s health. The emergency treatment administered today was remarkably effective.”
He continued, “I must commend the doctor who treated him—exceptionally skilled under pressure. Not only was his heart stabilized, but the overall stress on his body was also significantly reduced. If you can locate that doctor, I believe Mr. Merrick’s recovery could be even more successful.”
Eric lowered his eyes to the paper in his hands. The figures and data confirmed the doctor’s assessment: his grandfather’s condition was, for now, stable. Since his assistant had briefed him earlier, Eric had been wrestling with one question—who could have distressed his grandfather so profoundly that it led to this heart episode?
The young woman’s worried gaze shifted toward him. In a gentle voice, she asked, “Eric, do you really think Grandpa will be okay?”
The other young man’s expression mirrored her concern. “Eric, are you certain Grandpa’s going to pull through?”
Eric nodded firmly, his tone calm and reassuring. “Grandpa is doing much better now.”
The doctor added, “Sir, while his condition is improving, I still strongly recommend tracking down the doctor who administered the emergency care. It could be crucial for his full recovery.”
Eric gave a slight nod in agreement and returned the report. It was clear—they needed to find that doctor.
By that time, Merrick had regained consciousness. Eric quickly approached the bedside and took his grandfather’s hand gently. “Grandpa, how are you feeling?”
His granddaughter hurried over as well, her eyes rimmed with red from worry. “Grandpa, you’re awake! You really scared us.”
