Leonard looked at the people before him and said with a smile, “There’s no need. Your father appreciates your kindness, but I’ve already gotten used to life here, and I have people to look after me. If I went back, I might not adjust well.”
“What about us?” Solomon asked sadly. “Don’t you truly consider us at all? We’ve been looking for you for so many years. Do you really not miss us even a little? And what about your grandchildren and your daughter’s children? Don’t you want to see them?”
Felix echoed, “That’s right, Dad. You’re getting up there in years; just let us take care of you.”
Leonard’s smile was faint as he replied, “No. I haven’t done anything for you all these years, nor have I helped you establish your homes and careers, so I don’t have the obligation to let you care for me in my old age. Having Fenton and Ella here to look after me is enough.”
Peach spoke bluntly, “Dad, if you won’t let us care for you, do you intend to let that young girl do it? She isn’t related to us by blood; can she really be that dedicated?”
The information they had stated that the girl was an orphan and shared their surname, so she must have been adopted by the old man.
Peach’s words clearly displeased Leonard, and his voice became slightly cold as he said, “That’s not for you to worry about. Since you’ve seen me, go back now, and don’t come again. As long as you live your own lives well, I will be completely satisfied. That way, when I reach the other side and see your mother, I will have an easy conscience.”
“Dad,” Felix called out, wanting to say more, but Leonard immediately cut him off. “Go back. Continue living your lives as normal. Just keep me in your hearts.”
The group exchanged glances, unsure how to persuade the elderly man given his firm resolve.
Finally, as it was getting late, they had no choice but to leave Wyvern.
After they left, Leonard stayed locked inside his study and did not come out, remaining sequestered until dinner time with no sign of movement.
Lilian gently knocked on the door and said, “I’m coming in.” She then pushed the door open and walked inside.
She saw the old man sitting at his desk, staring intently at a photograph in his hand.
Lilian walked over and said softly, “Do you genuinely not want to go back and live with them? After all, they have been looking for you for so many years.”
