On Monday morning, Lilian returned to school just as the midterm exam results were being announced. The moment she stepped into the bustling classroom, the excited chatter abruptly ceased. Students hurried to their desks, eager to check their scores. Lilian, however, paid no attention to the sudden silence and calmly made her way to her seat. No sooner had she settled in than Natalie burst through the door, panting and wide-eyed.
“Lilian! Did you see your results? You’ve basically set the whole school on fire—perfect scores in every single subject!” Natalie exclaimed, her voice filled with disbelief and excitement.
Lilian glanced over at her desk mate’s ecstatic face and smiled softly. “I haven’t looked yet,” she admitted, “but now that you’ve shouted it out, I guess I already know whether I want to see them or not.”
Still buzzing with energy, Natalie pressed on. “How on earth did you pull that off? I rarely see you studying, yet your grades are out of this world.”
Just then, the homeroom teacher entered the room, his face glowing with pride. He moved straight to the podium and addressed the class.
“By now, I’m sure most of you have checked your results. Our class performed exceptionally well this time, and I’m proud to announce that we have the top student in the entire school—Lilian. I hope everyone can take inspiration from her dedication…” His voice was warm and encouraging as he continued with a heartfelt speech.
While the teacher spoke, Lilian quietly rubbed her temples, which had started to ache slightly from the tension. She then picked up her medical textbook and immersed herself in reading, tuning out the noise until the lunch bell rang.
At noon, Luna and Jill came looking for her. The courtyard was bathed in soft sunlight, the buzz of students mingling creating a lively backdrop.
Luna grinned teasingly as she approached. “Look at you, Lilian—our school’s new star! Top of every subject and the number one name on the school forum.”
Jill nodded enthusiastically, adding, “Absolutely! Lilian is the total package—brains and charm.”
Lilian shot them a playful glare. “Cut it out. I was hoping to keep a low profile during these three years, but now, after just one exam, everyone’s acting like I’m some kind of prodigy. If I’d known this would happen, I might have aimed just to scrape by.”
