Chapter 743 Jackson’s Doubt
Merrick’s announcement undoubtedly shocked the people around them, yet they all felt that something
was amiss.
Only Ivanov spoke excitedly, “So you’re the sister Grandfather recognized for me! This is incredible! I’ve been wondering which girl could impress Grandfather so much, and it turned out to be you! What a surprise!”
Merrick laughed. “Well, did this sister disappoint you?”
Ivanov nodded profusely. “No, no, I’m completely thrilled! I never thought I, Ivanov, would have such an amazing sister. If my friends find out, they’ll be green with envy.”
Linette, standing nearby, smiled. “I’m glad your wish has been fulfilled now.” She looked warmly at the exquisitely beautiful girl. “Lilian, hello. Welcome to the Philips family. I’m Linette.”
Lilian smiled. “Hello.”
Tracy watched them, muttering dismissively, “Sucking up for no reason.”
Meanwhile, in the banquet hall restroom, Jackson repeatedly splashed cold water on his face, hoping to calm down. But the girl’s face kept appearing in his mind, constantly merging with the face he remembered. Every frown, every smile, every movement and gesture of hers felt hauntingly familiar. “No, it can’t be. I must be overthinking this,” Jackson muttered to himself, looking in the mirror.
The restroom door was suddenly pushed open. Madison quickly slipped in and locked the door behind her. She walked up to the man. “Are you alright?”
Jackson stared sharply at Madison. “Lilian and Mom look so much alike. Why didn’t you tell me?” Madison looked surprised. “I assumed you knew. Besides, it’s not unusual for people to look similar.”
Jackson said angrily, “What do you mean, not unusual? If it were truly nothing, why would the old man recognize her as his granddaughter? There must be a reason for this. Could she possibly be…”
Before Jackson could finish, Madison cut him off. “You are overthinking it. Dad recognized her as his granddaughter mainly because she saved him, nothing more. Think about it: if she were truly that person’s daughter, do you think Dad would only recognize her as his adopted granddaughter? He would have brought her home and announced it to the world immediately.”
Jackson shook his head, looking thoughtful. “No, I still feel like something is wrong. That girl looks too much like her. It’s making me restless.”
Madison said coldly, “Can you stop being so paranoid? We’re at the critical juncture now; securing the inheritance is the most important thing. Besides, even if we assume the worst–even if she is related to the Philips family–so what? What happened all those years ago is known only to you, me, the heavens, and the earth. No one else knows. So much time has passed; it’s impossible to trace now. What are you still worried about? Plus, Lilian’s mother is dead, so who would ever know about that incident?”
