Lillian gave a sharp nod, then spun and launched a lethal kick at the first guard to reach her. Her movements were ruthless and efficient, underscored by the jarring thrum of nearby explosions that made the entire scene feel like a vision of the apocalypse.
The guards had started the fight with arrogant confidence, but they were quickly losing ground. This girl’s combat style was erratic and impossible to predict, and her strikes carried a terrifying amount of force.
Standing to the side, Lynette watched in pure shock. She never imagined this slender, delicate–looking girl was a trained fighter–and a high–level one at that. Even the elite enforcers who personally guarded George were struggling to keep up. As the guards began to drop one by one, the fear in Lynette’s eyes intensified.
Just then, the elevator pinged open. Leonard and the other elderly captives scrambled inside. Seeing her chance, a flash of desperation crossed Lynette’s face as she sprinted toward the lift, hoping to force her way in.
Lillian finished off the last guard in her path and moved with lightning speed, grabbing Lynette by the hair and yanking her back with a violent jerk. “Leaving so soon? You were the one who threw away your chance at survival. If I’m going down, you’re staying here with me.”
“Let me go! Lillian, let me go, do you hear me?” Lynette screamed, clawing at Lillian’s iron grip. “If the boss finds out about this, he’ll make you pay!” Despite her threats, she couldn’t break free, and she watched in horror as the elevator doors slowly slid shut.
Lillian threw Lynette back against the remaining guards who were trying to stand; they collided and collapsed in a heap.
The temperature in the facility was rising rapidly now as the inferno began to consume the
sector.
Lynette looked at the encroaching flames behind them, her eyes wide with primal terror. “Lillian! I give up! I surrender! The fire is almost here–I don’t want to burn to death! Let’s just get out of here, and I’ll apologize for everything once we’re safe!”
“Get out?” Lillian sneered. “Weren’t you the one just boasting about how you were going to kill me? Why would I give you a chance to live? Stay here. Wait for the fire to swallow you whole and turn you into ash.”
“No! I can’t die here! I won’t!” Lynette’s voice cracked into a sob. “Lillian, please, just let me go. I’m pregnant with George’s child! My life was finally getting better–I was going to be someone! It was my fault, okay? I was wrong! Just please, let me live!”
Lillian studied her for a moment, her gaze dripping with mockery. “So that’s why you’re so

loyal to him. You thought you could use the child in your womb to climb the social ladder? Tsk. tsk. What a pity.” She reached out and pressed the button for the second elevator.
Lynette watched the floor indicator as it ascende, her anxiety peaking. “Lillian, I’m begging you! Take me with you! I don’t want to die! I didn’t want to kill you–it was George’s order! I was just following instructions! Please, take me out of here!”
Lillian walked slowly toward Lynette. “You really want to leave?”
Lynette nodded frantically, her eyes brimming with tears. “Yes! Please! The baby is innocent, if nothing else!”
Lillian glanced at the woman’s stomach, her lips curling into a cold, calculating smile. “Fine. You’ve worked so hard to become his wife; it would be a shame if I didn’t help you realize that dream. But if George turns out not to care about that child, don’t blame me for your bad luck. I have no use for a pawn with no value. Understand?”
Without waiting for an answer, she hauled Lynette up by the arm and dragged her into the waiting elevator.
