George’s face twisted with malice. “Fine. You won this round,” he spat. “But do not celebrate just yet. Even if I am charged for holding them, the law won’t keep me for long. With the Mildew family’s influence in Radovia, I will be out before you know it. When that happens, I will make sure you pay ten times over.”
“Is that so?” Lillian said, her voice dropping to a chilling whisper. “Thank you for the reminder. It seems simply sending you to prison isn’t enough to set my mind at ease. In that case, I will give you a grand gift–something you will remember for the rest of your life.”
Before he could react, she flicked a small pill directly into his mouth.
George choked, the pill sliding down his throat before he could spit it out. He clutched his neck, eyes wide with terror. “What… what did you just give me?”
Lillian offered a cold, mirthless laugh. “Exactly what you asked me to research for you. It isn’t a finished product, but it is certainly effective. For instance, it will slowly erode your ability to think. You will become sluggish, your nerves will atrophy, and eventually, you will be forced to watch yourself become a vegetable. Tell me, are you satisfied?”
“No… impossible! I don’t believe you!” George shouted, though his voice shook with growing panic.
Lillian’s lips curled into a mocking sneer. “Don’t be so skeptical. You know what I am capable of. If I weren’t this good, you wouldn’t have coveted my talent so much that you would risk everything to kidnap me, would you? You even said it yourself–the student has surpassed the master. It would be a shame if I didn’t show you exactly what I can do.”
“Lillian, you bitch!” George roared, his fear turning into a desperate, impotent rage. “I should have killed you and Leonard the moment I had the chance!”
If it weren’t for this woman, Mildew Corp wouldn’t be in ruins. She was the architect of his downfall. The thought of the fate awaiting him made him grind his teeth in pure hatred.
“You don’t have that chance anymore,” Lillian said coldly. “Now, why don’t you focus on explaining to the mob of reporters behind you exactly why you kept us prisoner? I suspect Mildew Corp is about to undergo some earth–shattering changes, and as for you… you can wait for the law to take what’s left of you.”
She turned and walked away. Behind her, the press surged forward like a tidal wave. A dozen microphones were shoved into George’s face.
“Mr. Mildew, please explain the presence of these imprisoned scientists!”
“Is it true you abducted a student from Dracovia? What do you have to say for yourself?”

George’s expression turned feral. “Get lost! All you! If I see a single word of this reported. I will see to it that you never work in this industry again!” He shoved through the crowd and stormed toward his car
Inside the car.
Sebastian pulled Lillian tightly into his arms, holding her as if to convince himself she was really there. The memory of that gunshot still made his heart skip a beat. If Leonard hadn’t thrown himself in the way, he couldn’t bear to agine the reality he would be facing right
now.
“Lillian. I am so sorry. I was too late. I let you suffer so much. If I had reached you sooner. perhaps Leonard wouldn’t have been hurt.
Lillian leaned against his chest, her eyes red and dull with grief. “It isn’t your fault. You did everything you could. Master was hurt because of me. If I had seen through George’s scheme earlier–if I had been more guarded–he wouldn’t have had to take that bullet for me. It is my fault. I was useless. How could I have been so naive to think a man like him would keep his word? I thought if I blocked the shot, he would let Master go. I didn’t realize his real goal was to kill me right in front of him to make him suffer. It should have been me.”
As she spoke, tears began to track silently down her cheeks.
