Mr. Quinton smiled warmly as he made the introductions. “This is my wife, Lily, and my youngest son, Hugh.” Then, turning toward the woman sitting beside him, he added, “Lilian is the specialist I brought in to treat Jimmy.”

Lily let out a sharp, mocking laugh. “You’ve got to be kidding me. This little girl? Even the best doctors, both here and abroad, couldn’t diagnose what’s wrong with him. And you think she’s going to have the answer?”

Lilian said nothing, calmly sipping her soup. She was no stranger to skepticism like this—it came with the territory.

Mr. Quinton’s voice hardened. “This isn’t your concern. Focus on yourself.”

Lily hadn’t expected such a sharp rebuke from him. Quickly, she softened her tone. “Darling, I only said it for Jimmy’s sake. Think about it—none of the experts have been able to help. Bringing in an outsider at this stage might be risky.” She reached out, brushing her hand gently against his.

He pulled away, dabbing at his mouth with a napkin before speaking evenly, “It’s decided. Don’t bring it up again.” Rising from his seat, he turned to Lilian. “Take your time with breakfast. I’ll be in the study.”

Lilian nodded quietly and continued eating.

As Mr. Quinton climbed the stairs, Lily’s face darkened with resentment. She fixed a cold, hard stare on Lilian. “You don’t look familiar, young lady. What kind of spell have you cast on my husband? Or are you here with some hidden agenda?”

Lilian remained unruffled, calmly spooning more soup into her mouth.

Lily’s voice dropped to a low, threatening tone. “In a place like Sandy River, if you want to live peacefully, you’d better know your place. Stick your nose where it doesn’t belong, and you won’t even realize how the fire started. Consider this a friendly warning.”

Without missing a beat, Lilian swallowed gracefully, wiped the corners of her mouth with a napkin, and smiled slightly. “Is that so? Sounds like Madam Lily is speaking from experience. I’ll keep your advice in mind. But I’m the kind of person who walks into the tiger’s den fully aware of the danger inside. So naturally, I’m curious—what exactly caused two members of the Lincoln family to fall into comas for three months, yet still cling to life? Doesn’t that intrigue you, Madam Lily?”

Lilian’s calm, unshaken demeanor only fueled Lily’s fury. After all her years as Madam Lily, no one had ever dared to speak to her like that. With a furious snarl, Lily grabbed a cup of coffee and hurled it at Lilian.
