Sensing the undercurrents between them, Martha said awkwardly, “Since you two need to talk privately, Janet and I will head back out. Remember to call me if you need anything.”

As Martha stood up to leave, Everly’s voice turned sharp. “Martha, if your daughter is having trouble finding a husband, I can introduce her to some boyfriends. But since he and I are about to be engaged, I suggest you weigh your words carefully from now on. You know exactly where your family stands in Murica. “What is that supposed to mean?” Martha asked, staring at Everly in anger.

Everly stood up and stepped toward Martha, a mocking smile on her lips. “It’s a warning. Don’t go coveting people you have no business coveting. Otherwise, it’s hard to guarantee you won’t stir up a disaster.”

Everly had originally intended to have a proper talk with Uriel in hopes of being accepted. Instead, she had overheard this mother and daughter pair urging Uriel to have Sebastian reject the marriage.
