“You joke, Mr. Whitmore,” Cary replied with a thin smile. “That little bit of care hardly counts as thorough. In the future, the Cary estate will be the one relying on your care–especially Everly. I imagine she will require quite a lot of your attention.”

Cary’s words sparked a flurry of whispers among the onlookers. They had been speculating that the alliance was merely a groundless rumor, yet Cary’s statement seemed to confirm the impending union between the two families.

Sebastian’s dark eyes turned piercingly cold, and a mocking sneer touched his lips. “Is that so? In that case, rest assured, Cary. I will certainly take ‘excellent‘ care of the Chris family and Miss Everly. I promise it will be to your satisfaction and that I won’t disappoint your expectations.”

Just then, Derrick and Uriel approached. “What are you all discussing so intently?” Derrick asked with a smile. “You’ve attracted the attention of the entire ballroom.”

“Yes, I heard you mentioning something about taking care of Miss Everly from across the room. What’s this all about?” Uriel asked, her smile laced with irony.

Sebastian looked at Uriel and said smoothly, “Cary insisted that I take good care of Miss Everly. To show my gratitude for everything Cary has done for the Austin family, I promised him I
