Eric turned to address the crowd. “Since everyone is here, I’ll make it official. Lilian is indeed the granddaughter of the Philips family and our sole heir. I won’t go into the specifics here, but the family will be releasing a formal statement shortly.”
His confirmation removed any lingering doubt, leaving the room in a state of shock.
“Wait, I thought the Philips family only had one granddaughter? I’ve met her before… How is it suddenly Lilian?”
“Your info is way out of date. Word is, Madison wasn’t even a real member of the Philips family to begin with. If she’s a fraud, her daughter obviously has no claim to the name. Madison’s already been kicked out, and her daughter was sent crawling back to the Nico family.”
“Right, I heard that too. Her husband apparently remarried and has a new baby on the way. That girl Audrey is having a pretty miserable time of it back at the Nicos!”
“I actually knew the Philips family had a daughter years ago, but she went missing. It was a family secret and no one dared to bring it up.”
Meanwhile, Cary felt a crushing weight on his chest. He could barely breathe. Grabbing Will’s hand, he gasped, “Get me to the lounge. I need to sit down.”
Seeing Cary’s state, Derrick chimed in with a mock–concerned tone. “Cary, you look terrible. Should I call a doctor? Honestly, at your age, you really shouldn’t let your temper get the best of you. Is it really worth picking a fight with a young girl? It’d be a shame if you worked yourself into a heart attack over nothing.”
“Thank you for your concern. I’m fine. I just need a moment,” Cary spat through gritted teeth. He looked at Will and barked, “Get me out of here!”
Will hurried to lead the shaking old man toward the private lounge.
Watching them retreat, Uriel couldn’t hide a satisfied smirk. Seeing Cary so worked up he could barely stand was a rare treat.
Still, she was genuinely surprised. She knew a bit about the Philips family history, specifically about a daughter who had been a literal child prodigy. She had been the golden child everyone was compared to, which was why the story stuck.
The girl had vanished years ago and was never found. If what Eric said was true, then Lilian had to be that woman’s daughter
Any remaining skeptics in the room quickly shut their mouths. If Eric was claiming her publicly, there was no room for argument
Just as a stunned silence settled over the ballroom, a flirtatious voice broke the air. “Sebastian! You’re finally here!”
Everly sashayed toward them, her face glowing with a practiced, bashful smile. But just as she opened her mouth to speak to
Sebastian.
“Ugh…” A loud, disgusted sound cut her off
Eric immediately turned to Lilian, panic in his voice. “Lilian, what’s wrong? Are you feeling sick?”
