Lilian fixed Cary with a freezing stare. “If I were a ghost, you’d be the first person I dragged down to hell. I wouldn’t waste my time listening to you bark. Just because you haven’t seen something before doesn’t make it impossible. It just means you’re ignorant. Don’t use your lack of perspective as an excuse for your nonsense. But since we’re talking about ghosts, take a look at your granddaughter. She’s the one looking like a nightmare right now.”
Confused, Cary turned to Everly. His eyes widened in pure shock. “You… what happened to your face?”
Everly looked lost. “What are you talking about?” She reached up to touch her cheek, but the moment her fingers made contact, her expression twisted into pure terror. “What is this? What’s on my face!”
Lilian pulled a small compact mirror from her clutch and tossed it over. “Here. Keep it. Don’t be shy, take a good look.”
Lilian winced and looked away. She had intended to ruin the woman’s complexion, but even she hadn’t expected the toxin to react quite like this. If she’d known, she would have dialed back the dosage. Now, she’d be lucky if she could look at food for the next two weeks without losing her appetite.
Eric leaned in, keeping his voice low as he watched Lilian’s sheepish expression. “So this is the gift you delivered to her the other day? That is cold, even for you. You took a perfectly good–looking woman and turned her into a walking horror movie. I’m going to have nightmares tonight.”
Lilian gave him an embarrassed smile. “It was a mistake. When I was prepping the formula, I messed up the concentrations. I only meant to give her a few breakouts; I didn’t think it would escalate like this. This is officially the biggest blunder of my medical career. It’s a disgrace, really.”
Eric could only offer a helpless, amused smile.
By now, the crowd had begun to recover from their initial panic. As their eyes landed on Everly, their shock turned to visceral disgust. Some guests even began to gag.
“Is that really Everly? That’s horrific. What are those things on her skin?”
“It has to be her! Same hair, same dress. It’s her, alright. I guess the queen is now the freak.”
“Karma really is a bitch. The Chris family brought this on themselves. If they hadn’t tried to strong–arm the Austins and just stayed in their lane, they wouldn’t be in this mess today.”
Ignoring the taunts, Everly scrambled to pick up the mirror. The moment she saw her reflection, a blood–curdling scream tore from her throat. “No! My face! What happened to my face!”
In the mirror, the woman was covered in clusters of bloated, weeping blisters. They were packed so tightly together there wasn’t a patch of clear skin left, and more seemed to be erupting by the second.
Even Cary instinctively took two steps back, his face pale with revulsion.
“Grandpa, help me!” Everly wailed, looking at him with pleading eyes. “Call a doctor! Tell them to fix this! I can’t look like this! It’ll ruin me! Grandpa, please!”
Cary shook his head, his eyes filled with a mix of denial and horror. “No… you aren’t Everly. You aren’t my granddaughter. You’re a demon! My granddaughter is the most beautiful woman in the world. She doesn’t look like… that!”
