Lilian looked at him, her eyes rimmed with red. What, are you planning to ditch me again? Keep me in the dark while you play the lone hero? Did it ever cross your mind that I might not want your selfrighteous protection? She took a shaky breath and added, Besides, I’m already done with you. You don’t have the right to tell me what to do.

Sebastian looked at her stubborn face, a helpless, weary smile flickering in his eyes. He opened his mouth to speak, but Foster cut him off, rushing over in a sweat. Sir, we’ve swept the entire floor. Nothing. We can’t find it.”

Can’t find it, can you?Cary gloated. I told you it was a waste of time, but you wouldn’t listen. He strolled over to a nearby table, picked up a glass of red wine, and took a leisurely sip as if he hadn’t just signed everyone’s death warrant.

Sebastian’s jaw tightened as his eyes scanned the room with predatory intensity. The clock on the ballroom wall was ticking away, each beat sounding like a hammer against their skulls.

Lilian’s expression went cold as she focused her senses. She was certain the bomb was in this room. But where could that old snake have hidden it? And why was he so confident they’d never find it?

Her gaze snapped upward. She looked at the massive, ornate chandelier hanging from the center of the ceiling. There, tucked deep inside the uppermost tier of the casing, was a faint, irregular shadow.

Cary’s hand tightened around his wine glass as he tracked Lilian’s movement, his smug expression wavering for the first time.

Lilian caught the flicker of nerves on his face and let out a chilling smirk. She walked directly beneath the giant light fixture. Up close, she could almost hear the rhythmic, mechanical tick of the timer.

Sebastian noticed her change in focus and followed her line of sight. The realization hit him instantly.

Eric stepped up beside her. Is it up there?

Yes,Lilian said firmly. Right at the top.

Sebastian barked an order to Foster. Get a ladder. Now!

Cary stood up and walked toward them, his voice a jagged sneer. It’s no use. You have two minutes left, tops. Even if you find a ladder, you’ll never reach it in time. Finding it doesn’t change a thing. You’re still going to die! Hahaha!

Is that so?Lilian’s eyes locked onto Cary’s. Before anyone could react, she lunged forward, snatched the opulent cane from his hand, and hurled it at the chandelier. The cane whistled through the air, trailing a sharp, ethereal blue light. The guests standing below scrambled back, diving for the safe zones.

Everyone watched, breathless, as the cane pierced the chandelier’s casing and embedded itself deep into the ceiling. For a heartbeat, there was total silence.

Cary let out a booming laugh. Hahaha! I thought you were some kind of elite player, but you’re just a joke! I gave you way too much credit.

Lilian’s lips curled into a cold, knowing smile. Really? Then keep those eyes wide open and let’s see who’s laughing.

As the words left her mouth, the massive glass casing shattered into a thousand shards, raining down onto the floor. Tumbling through the debris was the device.

Foster lunged, catching the bomb midair. He looked at the display. One minute left.
