Lilian finished freshening up and stepped out of the bathroom in her loungewear just as a knock sounded at the bedroom door.
She opened it to find Eric standing there with a warm glass of milk. “I know today took a lot out of you, so I made this for you,” he said, walking in and setting the glass on the table in the seating area.
Lilian smiled at him. “I didn’t know you had such a thoughtful side. Whoever ends up marrying you is going to be very lucky.”
“Please,” Eric snorted, sitting down on the sofa. “Compared to how Sebastian treats you, I’m an amateur. That man handles you like you’re made of glass. He’s terrified you’ll melt if he holds too tight or shatter if he lets go.”
Lilian sat across from him, shooting him a playful, suspicious glare. “You didn’t come in here to be his lobbyist, did you?”
Eric maintained a gentle smile. “What’s going on in that head of yours? Why would I act as his spokesperson? We’re family; I don’t make a habit of siding against my own. I’m mainly here to ask what your plans are. Do you want to head back home, or stay and look around for a few days? The chaos is basically over. Sebastian can handle the cleanup himself now, so you don’t have to worry anymore.”
“Who said I was worried?” Lilian muttered. “I’m not worried about him at all.”
Eric chuckled. “Is that so? Then I wonder who that little girl was who caught a flight the second she heard the news, ready to demand an explanation, and rushed into the line of fire without a second thought for her own safety?”
Lilian rolled her eyes. “Fine, laugh all you want. So what if I was? Is it so wrong to care? He is my fiancé, after all.”
“Oh, so he’s your fiancé again?” Eric teased. “Back at the ballroom, you were pretty adamant about dumping him.”
“I was angry, okay?” Lilian said softly. “Besides, he shouldn’t have kept me in the dark. If we’re supposed to spend our lives together, shouldn’t honesty be the baseline? I’ve never been a fan of guessing games; it’s exhausting.”
Eric’s voice turned serious and kind. “He was wrong to hide it, I agree. But you have to understand that his starting point was your well–being. He knew that if he told you, you’d worry yourself sick and come running, which is exactly what happened. Even with your abilities, the level of danger behind this plot was something even he couldn’t fully predict. Do you really think he’d willingly drag you into that? It makes sense that he kept it from you. Even Grandpa chose to hide the news at first because he knows you too well. You keep talking about seeing things from another perspective; have you asked yourself what you would do? If you knew the road ahead was life–threatening, would you tell him?”
Lilian frowned and slowly shook her head. “No. If I knew it was that dangerous, I’d rather face it alone than risk him getting a scratch because of me.”
“Exactly,” Eric said firmly. “It’s because you love each other too much. Neither of you can stand the thought of the other getting hurt, so you both choose silence to protect one another. In that light, Sebastian’s decision was only natural. If he had known how much danger he was in and dragged you into the middle of it anyway,
