“Ryan is the Chairman’s right hand,” Janus said with a cold smirk. “When I extend an olive branch, they’ll have no choice but to grab it. Unless, of course, they want to watch Skyreach get dragged under by a toxic plot of land.”
The door to the lounge swung open just as the words left his mouth. Ryan walked in with a steady, unbothered stride. “Sorry to keep you waiting,” he said, flashing a polite, empty smile as he took a seat across from Janus. “What brings you by today?”
Janus set his coffee cup down, his eyes dripping with mockery. “With Skyreach facing such a mess, I thought I’d drop by to offer my condolences, and a solution. My offer still stands. I’ll take that land off your hands for double the market price. What do you say?”
“Double?” Ryan let out a short, dry laugh. “I have to admit, I’m touched. To offer that kind of money for a piece of land that’s supposedly toxic is… well, it’s impressive.”
“Think nothing of it,” Janus replied smoothly. “Money is no object when it comes to something I want. I’ve had my eye on that plot for a long time. Even if it has issues, I’m willing to overlook them if the price is right. Besides, it solves your biggest headache, doesn’t it? It’s a win–win. I can’t imagine you’d turn that down.”
Ryan leaned back, his smile widening. “You’d think so. Honestly, I’d have no reason to say no. But I have a conscience. I couldn’t possibly live with myself if I sold you a problem plot. It would ruin our reputation. How could we ever show our faces in this industry again? You understand, right?”
Janus’s eyes sharpened into slits, his smile turning predatory. “It sounds like you’re planning on throwing my goodwill back in my face.”
“Perish the thought,” Ryan countered, his tone perfectly even. “We appreciate the gesture. In fact, my Chairman asked me to pass along a message. She wanted to thank you personally for all the extra attention you’ve given us these past few days.”
Janus froze for a split second before a sneer crossed his face. “I have no idea what you’re talking about.”
Ryan dropped the act, his expression turning stone–cold. “Let’s stop playing games. You know exactly why Skyreach has been in the headlines. We both know what your end goal is. But the Chairman’s orders were very specific. Even if that land turns out to be a pile of scrap, it’s our scrap. She’s more than happy to set a few billion on fire just for the hell of it.”
“Is that so?” Janus hissed. “I didn’t realize the head of Skyreach was so flush with cash that they could just throw away billions on a whim. I’m truly impressed.”
“There’s a lot you don’t know,” Ryan shot back with a smirk. “Money is the one thing our Chairman has in abundance. And usually, when someone makes her life difficult, she makes it her mission to return the favor.”
Janus stared at Ryan, his gaze icy and lethal. “So Skyreach is picking a fight with the Soren family. Is that the play?”
“That’s a bit dramatic, don’t you think?” Ryan’s voice was thick with sarcasm. “Last I checked, you don’t speak for the Sorens. Mr. Robert is still the one calling the shots. Maybe hold off on the threats until you actually inherit the throne. It’s a bit embarrassing otherwise.”
Janus’s face contorted with rage. He stood up abruptly, his eyes burning with malice. “Fine. Have it your way. We’ll see how long your Chairman stays unmoved once that land is officially declared a wasteland.” He turned on his heel and stormed out of the room, his assistant scurrying after him.
