Karina looked like she was about to snap. “So what? Do we just let them push us around? These people are relentless. If we cave now after all these petty stunts, I’m never going to hear the end of it from my own conscience.”
Lilian watched her, a small smile playing on her lips. “You know, Karina, in all the time I’ve known you, I’ve never seen you this worked up. You’ve actually got a bit of a devil wears prada vibe going on right now.”
Karina let out a sharp, dry laugh. “Oh, sure, joke all you want. We haven’t even dealt with Janus yet, and now Rowan is breathing down our necks. It’s not even about whether we sell the land anymore. It’s about which one of these vultures we’re supposed to feed.”
Lilian gave her a playful look. “Look at you, seeing right through the noise.”
“It’s obvious,” Karina said, her pride showing through her annoyance. “If the Soren Group just wanted the property, they’d send one representative. But Janus and Rowan are running separate plays. This isn’t just a business deal; it’s a civil war. There’s something much bigger happening behind the scenes.”
Lilian gave her a thumbs–up. “Spot on. Your instincts are sharper than I thought. They’re desperate because Grandpa Robert set the stakes: whoever brings him that land wins the keys to the kingdom. Whoever recovers the property becomes the heir to the Soren family. That’s why they’ve lost all sense of decency.”
Karina’s expression darkened. “If that’s the case, you’re in real danger. No matter which side you pick, the other one is going to come for your throat.”
Lilian’s smile turned cold and sharp. “Who said I was picking a side? I’ve already said it, that land stays with me. Once something is in my pocket, I’d like to see them try and take it by force.”
‘But Rowan knows who you are,” Karina reminded her, her brow furrowed. “He’s going to use that as a knife to your throat until you hand over the deed.”
Lilian twirled her pen, her gaze turning lazy and unbothered. “Then we’ll see if I actually care about his threats. If he wants to leak t, let him. I’m curious to see how many enemies I’ve actually made. Let’s find out if there are more people looking to bury me or lift me up.”
nside the back of a black Rolls–Royce, Janus sat in a silence so heavy it felt like the air was charged with electricity. His face was a mask of cold fury, a storm waiting to break.
His assistant watched him nervously. “What’s the plan? Rowan is going to make his move any second. If he gets to them first, everything we’ve done just clears the path for him.”
Janus didn’t move. “You think because I couldn’t get the land, a hack like Rowan will? You’re giving him way too much credit.”
