Lilian didn’t hesitate. “Don’t bother. We aren’t close enough to be sharing a drink, and I’m not in the habit of drinking with men like you anyway. Keep the wine for yourself.”
Rowan’s expression flickered. He hadn’t expected her to be this blunt, shutting him down without a shred of politeness. It caught him completely off guard. “My mistake,” he said, forcing a smile. “In that case, what can I get you?”
Lilian looked at the waiter. “A pot of tea. Thanks.”
The waiter bowed and retreated, returning moments later with the tea service. Once everything was set, the staff moved to the far corner of the suite. In a club like this, the service was constant and silent, waiting for the slightest cue.
Lilian lifted her cup, caught the scent, and took a small sip. “You went to a lot of trouble to get me here. Why don’t we skip the pleasantries and get to the point? I assume you didn’t bring me here just to watch me drink tea.”
Rowan studied her. From the moment she’d walked in, she had been unnervingly calm, relaxed, even. There wasn’t a hint of the anxiety he expected from someone whose secrets were in his hands. She wasn’t trying to suck up to him or bargain for his silence, and it made her incredibly hard to read.
“I like your style,” Rowan said. “No games. I can respect that.” He glanced at the two waiters. “Get out.”
The staff bowed and exited, closing the heavy doors behind them. The suite fell into a heavy silence.
Lilian set her teacup down. “Go ahead. You know I don’t like wasting time. Let’s hear it, Rowan. You’ve dug up whatever you wanted to find, so what do you actually want?”
Rowan swirled his wine, watching the dark liquid coat the glass. “Since you’ve put it that way, I’ll be blunt. I want that land. Name your price. As long as it’s within my power, I’ll meet it.”
Lilian twirled her cup, a cold laugh escaping her lips. “How generous. All of Kingston thinks that plot is a toxic waste dump. People are running for the hills, yet here you are, telling me to name my price. I’m almost flattered. But I have to wonder, what exactly is your definition of power? Are we talking a hundred billion? A trillion?”
Rowan froze for a second before letting out a soft chuckle. “You’re joking. That land isn’t even worth ten billion right now, especially with the headlines. Even if this scandal hadn’t happened, it would never be worth triple the original price. I’m trying to have a serious conversation here, Lilian. I’d appreciate it if you didn’t treat this like a joke.”
Lilian leaned back into the sofa, a faint, mocking smile on her face. “I’m not joking. I never joke about money. To be honest, Janus came to me today with the exact same pitch. I don’t know what kind of game the Soren family is playing, but it’s obvious you two are in a race. Tell me, if I told Janus you were willing to pay a hundred billion, do you think he wouldn’t try to outbid you?”
