Chapter 963 Ambition
Robert looked up, caught the look on Rowan’s face, and nodded toward the butler. “Leave us.”
“Yes, sir,” the butler replied, quickly exiting the study.
Once the door clicked shut, Robert’s voice dropped. “Well? How did it go?”
Rowan spoke cautiously, keeping his eyes down. “The negotiation failed.”

Robert’s hand stilled for a second before he resumed his work. “Walk me through it. I want to hear exactly how you handled her. By all accounts, that land is a liability for them right now. Toss in the leverage you have over her identity, and I don’t see how you walked away empty–handed.”
Rowan recounted the entire conversation, from his offer to her refusal.
Robert looked genuinely surprised. “You’re telling me she didn’t care about her identity being leaked? Not at all?”
“Not a bit,” Rowan said. “Even when I brought up the Sinclairs, she didn’t flinch. She basically told me that even if the fallout destroys Skyreach, she isn’t budging.”
Robert’s eyes sharpened. “The girl has more spine than I gave her credit for.” He had expected this to be a closed case, a simple matter of leaning on her until she broke.
Rowan watched his grandfather’s expression carefully. “What’s the move now? It’s pretty clear Lilian has no intention of selling. She’s just playing games. Janus already tried his luck with their man, Ryan, and got the same answer. She told him even if the land is worthless, it’s hers to keep, just for the hell of it.”
“Janus went after her too?” Robert asked.
“Not directly,” Rowan explained. “He dealt with Ryan, but Lilian made sure her message got back to him. From the way she talked to me, she definitely knows Janus is the one behind the recent headlines. She’s furious.”
Robert stared at the teacup on his desk, lost in thought. “She’s proving to be more of a headache than I anticipated. If standard tactics aren’t working, the odds of her handing that land over willingly are slim.”
Rowan’s brow furrowed. “So what do we do? If she refuses to sell, our hands are tied.”
Robert’s gaze turned icy. “She claims she doesn’t care about the world knowing who she is? Fine. Let’s see how much she enjoys being the target of a public execution.”
Rowan hesitated, looking at the coldness in the old man’s eyes. “But if we leak her identity now, we lose our only piece of leverage. Won’t that make getting the land back even harder?”
Robert let out a dry, harsh laugh. “Leverage? It’s only leverage if she’s afraid of it. If she doesn’t care, then the secret is useless to us Since it won’t buy us the land, we might as well use it to burn her down. Let’s see how she handles being the most hated woman in the city.”
“And the property?” Rowan asked.
Robert’s expression was murderous. “Skyreach used the press to swallow Million Corp whole. I refuse to believe we can’t use those same tactics to dismantle them. Once Skyreach collapses under the weight of its own scandal, that land will be back in our hands before the dust settles.”

Robert wasn’t about to let some girl get the better of him. If she wanted to be difficult, he’d make her pay for everything, including what happened two years ago.
Rowan was stunned. He hadn’t expected his grandfather to go this far. “What about Sebastian?” he asked, his voice wavering. “If this breaks tomorrow, he’ll know it was us. That man is dangerous. Are we really ready to have him as an enemy?”
Robert let out a dismissive laugh. “You think I’m afraid of him? If it comes down to a war between us and Empire Group, it’s anyone’s game. Besides, no matter how much a man obsesses over a woman, he isn’t going to gamble his entire legacy on her.”
“But…” Rowan tried to speak, but Robert cut him off.
“Rowan, do you know what your problem is? You’re always hesitating. You don’t have the killer instinct a leader needs. In that regard, you aren’t even in the same league as Janus.”
A dark look crossed Rowan’s eyes. “Then why help me?”
“You want to know why I’m backing you instead of him?” Robert’s gaze was mocking. “It’s simple. Janus has the brains, but he’s arrogant and he doesn’t listen. You, on the other hand, do exactly what you’re told. That’s your greatest asset. This family doesn’t need someone who thinks they’re bigger than the name. That’s where Janus failed. But if you keep acting like a coward, even my support won’t be enough to get you that seat. Do you get it?”
Rowan straightened up. “I get it.”
