Jacob let out a cold laugh. “With Lilian’s personality, the more they use these underhanded tactics, the less likely they are to get anything from her. They’re lashing out because they’re desperate. They’ll do whatever it takes to tear her down.”
“What should we do?” his assistant asked. “Do you want us to give the Sorens a taste of their own medicine?”
Jacob’s expression cooled as his fingers tapped rhythmically against the desk. “The Sorens still have plenty of assets in Solara, don’t they? We might not be able to touch them in Kingston, but in Solara, I’ll make sure they lose more than just a bit of skin.”
He couldn’t quite put a name to what he felt for Lilian, but he knew he couldn’t stand to see her hurt. Even though he knew she had Sebastian by her side now, he still wanted to do everything in his power to keep her safe. He had promised to protect Skyreach Group, and he wasn’t about to break that promise now.
The entrance to Skyreach Tower in Kingston was a war zone. Reporters from every major outlet had swarmed the building, desperate for an interview with the teenage chairman. Inside the tower, the atmosphere was thick with anxiety. Even though most employees had suspected the truth about the girl’s identity, the confirmation had hit like a freight train. The vicious online comments had everyone on edge; they had finally landed good jobs at a rising company, and the last thing they wanted was to see it all go up in flames.
Karina stared at her screen in the general manager’s office, her eyes red with anger. “How can people say this? Cold–blooded? Heartless? They don’t know the first thing about her! Don’t they realize that words can kill?”
Beside her, Ryan was hunched over his computer, his fingers flying across the keyboard. “These people are just being manipulated. The Sorens bought a small army of trolls to steer the conversation. That’s why it looks like everyone’s against her.”
“So what do we do?” Karina asked, her voice tight. “Are we just going to let them lie until her reputation is completely trashed?”
Ryan let out a grim laugh. “Don’t worry. Lies don’t last forever. Once I track down the source of these posts and put the truth out there, they’re going to pay.”
Karina sighed. “I hope Lilian is okay. She told us not to worry over the phone, but how can we not worry when we see this garbage online?”
Ryan hit the Enter key with a final, decisive tap. “The boss told us she’s got it, so trust her. Sebastian is there, too. He’s not going to let her fall. Our job is to keep this place running. Staying focused is the best thing we can do for her right now.”
“You’re right,” Karina agreed. “I’ll stay on top of the teams. You make sure the testing department hurries up with the report on that land. If we can clear the air on the environmental scandal, it’ll take a lot of pressure off her.”
