Chapter 122 Kailee The Human Vortex

heavy metal door clicked shut behind Kailee, sealing the three of them inside the dim, vending- machine-lit break room. Kailee was definitely on the top ten best apocalypse fighters, but Joanna never met her once, only knew Kailee as the human vortex who could blast a whole hoard to shreds with a single spnic air pulse. Her muscles and buzzed haircut said it all. The silence stretched, thick and suffocating, before Kailee finally broke it. She took a slow step forward, her piercing eyes shifting from Joanna’s frozen figure over to Caleb, who still stood with that same serene, knowing smile.
“Is she the one, Caleb?” Kailee asked, her voice dropping to a low, demanding hum that seemed to vibrate the very air in the room.
Caleb’s smile faded into an expression of calm gravity. He didn’t look back at Kailee; his intense, sharp gaze remained locked entirely on Joanna. “She is the answer to restore order, but it just depends if she has the right team…” he murmured, his smooth voice echoing with absolute certainty.
The weight of his words hung heavily in the stagnant air. Joanna’s mind raced, her body finally breaking out of its paralysis as the immediate, physical presence of Kailee overrode the psychological shock of Caleb’s revelation. She took a sharp step backward, her heels hitting the concrete wall, her hand re-tightening around the hilt of her blade.
For a long, tense moment, nobody moved. The air practically crackled with mutual distrust. Finally, Joanna lowered her knife just a fraction, her eyes darting between the two black-clad figures.
“I am not the answer, I am just a survivor,” Joanna snapped, her eyes darting between the two black-clad figures. “And right now, my instincts are telling me to walk out that door.”
Caleb tilted his head, his sharp eyes glinting with that same mysterious, unsettling depth. He took a slow, fluid step closer, his voice dropping to a hypnotic whisper that seemed to echo inside her head.
“Don’t you want answers from your dream?” Caleb asked softly, a faint, knowing smirk playing on his lips. “I can give you that and more, Joanna… under a few conditions.”
Joanna’s grip on her knife tightened, her heart hammering against her ribs at the mention of the dreams. “What kind of conditions?” she asked, her voice guarded, yet laced with an undeniable, desperate curiosity.
Kailee stepped forward, crossing her arms as she watched the exchange with a calculating gaze. “It’s simple,” Kailee stated bluntly, the air in the room humming faintly around her. “We want in. Caleb wants to join your team, and we require full access to your group’s resources and food. More importantly, we need a safe, stable environment to help both him and me get stronger. Our abilities require time and energy to develop to their full potential.”
Joanna scoffed, her eyes darting between the legendary, air-manipulating fighter and the self-proclaimed dream weaver. “You expect me to just hand over our hard-earned food and shelter to two total strangers… I am going to need more than that! What exactly do we get in return for risking our lives on you two?”
Caleb’s expression turned dead serious, the eerie calm returning to his handsome features. “In turn, I will personally help protect you, Joanna. You are a target, whether you realize it yet or not and not just from Elliot.” He leaned in slightly, the gravity of his words making the air feel heavy. “Furthermore, we will help your team defeat the Nightshade base. And once they are out of the way, we will help you set up your future base in Evercrest.”
Hearing the name Evercrest. Joanna realized they knew her end game before she did. And she was

absolutely certain his voice was the one whispering to her for months. Whispers of love and safety even as the world turned into chaos. Yet, looking at the two formidable figures dressed in sleek black, a deep.
tant knot tightened in her stomach. They were offering her the world, but the price of trusting them could be fatal.
“Tell me my dream first and then we can discuss my team,” Joanna demanded.
Caleb steps back, leaning smoothly against the plastic table.
“I am a dream weaver, Joanna,” Caleb explained softly. “My power is that I can hear thoughts, conversations plans, and possibilities from anything in my environment.”
He paused, his eyes narrowing slightly. “With considerable energy, I can share them with people in their dreams.”
Caleb leaned forward, his voice dropping. “In your dream, you saw flashes of an underground lab.”
Joanna stiffened, her breath catching in her throat.
“Ability users as test subjects,” Caleb continued. “Your sister’s betrayal.”
Joanna’s hand began to tremble against her blade.
“You saw Elliot, and his team,” he whispered. “Everything from your dream was made from others’ information.”
Kailee watched Joanna’s shocked reaction with a calm expression.
“I can stay in a city and know most secrets within a day,” Caleb added. “I knew this apocalypse was coming two years ago.”
Joanna was stunned. Her mind reeled as the impossible puzzle pieces finally clicked together.
“Alright,” Joanna said, the initial wave of shock slowly settling into a cold, calculated focus. “So what you are saying is that everything from my dream was based on the thoughts and feelings of others?”
Caleb shrugged, shifting his weight slightly against the table. “It’s more complicated than that. If I sit still, my mind lets out threads that absorb people’s personalities, memories, and future plans. Then the threads rearrange themselves like data telling me what will likely happen. I always sense the reaction to the action. It’s not perfect by any account, but it is pretty close.”
Joanna’s eyes narrowed as she processed this. “Is that why my timeline and memories from my dream don’t line up exactly?”
“Yes,” he said, nodding confirmation. “You’re seeing a mosaic of scattered minds, processed through your own subconscious. But the core dangers are very real.”
The tension in the break room shifted. The raw impossibility of Caleb’s dream weaver ability was still hard to swallow, but the precise details he knew about her sister and Elliot left Joanna with very little choice but to believe him.
Kailee broke the brief silence, her voice cutting through the hum of the vending machines. “Now that you know he’s the real deal, we need an answer, Joanna. We have our terms. We protect you, wipe out Nightshade, and secure your future in Evercrest. In exchange, we get food, safety, and a place to grow our
