Rewrite the Apocalypse dream (by Dee Cari) novel Chapter 146

Chapter 146 Help me figure out who the mole is

Aone, incredibly battered sedan turned into the dark gas station. Its passenger-side headlight was completely missing, and the single remaining bulb was taped together, flickering like a dying flashlight. The car let out a massive, embarrassing backfire-BANG!-that made half the soldiers jump out of their boots, before it squealed to a halt right by the pumps.

Every rifle in the perimeter raised in terrified unison toward the mysterious, coughing metal box.

The door of the sedan groaned open. A lone figure stepped out into the headlights, dressed completely in fitted, tactical black civilian clothes. He looked effortlessly, undeniably hot, possessing a raw charisma despite the thin layer of soot smudged across his sharp jawline.

Will’s eyes went wide. “Hold your fire! Stand down!” he yelled, jogging out to throw a crisp salute. After a hushed two-minute conversation, they walked straight toward Joanna’s group. The man was Commander Briggs.

“Commander?” Kailee breathed, flushing slightly. Rachel raised an eyebrow, appreciating the view.

Briggs stopped at the picnic table, his expression icy and controlled. “With Jax pulling out tonight, I went back for your group. They are moving out of the apartments now, and Jake is with the main transport. Those are amazing RVs, by the way. I’ve decided to join your convoy.”

Rachel smiled. “That is what you get when you make friends with a survivalist.”

Joanna gestured to the spread. “Help yourself to some food, Commander.”

Briggs swallowed and sat down. Will instantly offered his own plate. “Take mine, sir, I was done anyway,” he stammered, scurrying away.

While making a plate, Briggs lowered his voice. “I had to find you after receiving some strange intel. Jax just radioed me questioning your crew’s specific abilities. He knew exactly what you did to those raiders twenty minutes ago. I shut him down quick, but it means he has a mole right here in this convoy.”

Briggs studied Joanna intently, his cold, piercing eyes searching her face for even a flicker of fear. Instead, she just sat there, entirely calm, as if she had predicted his exact words an hour ago.

A sudden, breathless laugh escaped his lips. He leaned in just a fraction closer, his gaze dropping to her lips before snapping back to her eyes. “You already knew, didn’t you?”

Joanna gave him a smooth, slow nod. The sheer certainty in her eyes left the hardened commander momentarily breathless. She constantly surprised him, her sharp mind pulling him in deeper every time they spoke.

Briggs took a bite of the steak, his eyes widening in pure shock as he looked down at his plate. “Holy hell. This food is absolutely amazing!”

The table erupted into laughter, breaking the sudden, heavy tension.

“Alright, crew,” Rachel said, trading a knowing, mischievous glance with Kailee as she stood up. “We should take a quick bathroom break inside the station before we hit the road. Let’s move.”

Julian and Kailee followed her, slipping away into the shadows and deliberately leaving Joanna completely

alone with Briggs.

hair between them shifted instantly, growing thick and heavy with a sudden, charged current of attraction. Briggs set his fork down, his eyes locking onto hers with an intensity that made the surrounding apocalypse vanish. He leaned across the table, his broad shoulders shifting under his tight black shirt.

“Alright, Joanna,” he murmured, his voice dropping into a low, gravelly baritone that felt entirely too close. “Since you seem to know absolutely everything, why don’t you help me out? Help me figure out who the

mole is.”

Joanna smirked, a playful, dangerous light dancing in her eyes as she leaned back against the van. “What’s the matter, Commander? I thought the military was supposed to be elite. You really can’t figure it out on your own?”

The teasing comment hung in the air. Briggs didn’t back down; instead, his gaze darkened, becoming fiercely focused as he stared directly into her eyes, trapping her in place. The raw, magnetic gravity of his presence was overwhelming.

A sudden, uncharacteristic blush crept up Joanna’s cheeks, her heart fluttering against her ribs under his intense stare. She quickly cleared her throat, dropping her voice to a razor-sharp whisper to break the spel

“It’s Galen.”

Briggs leaned in even closer, his broad frame completely blocking out the rest of the dark parking lot. The distance between them shrank to a matter of inches, the scent of leather and cold ash rolling off his black jacket. Joanna held her breath, her eyes locking onto his as the silence stretched, heavy and dangerous.
