Chapter 148 Zombie Cows
Jonna twisted the cap off her bottle, taking a long drink of crisp spring water. Settling into the rear seat of the armored truck, she adjusted her position. Commander Briggs sat right beside her in the dim tactical light, while Will kept his eyes glued to the dark road ahead.
With the rumble of the diesel engine masking their voices, Joanna and Briggs leaned in close to talk quietly.
“We can’t let Galen ride out the clock,” Briggs murmured, his low baritone dropping into a cold whisper. “I we drive straight into the Eldon bottleneck, he’ll trip the trap. I’m going to pull the convoy into a short detour at the old meat processing plant just ahead. We’ll overtake Galen there, isolate him, and question
him.”
The moment the word detour left his mouth, Joanna froze mid-breath.
Her mind flashed back to the neat ink in her vest pocket: Go with Briggs on detour. Save the metal box from room
Caleb’s riddle clicked into place with terrifying precision. The meat processing plant was the location.
Joanna masked her sudden shock, turning her head to look out the window at the burning skyline. Taking Galen out quicker, right here on their own terms, was the best way to completely rewrite Jax’s script.
She turned back to the commander and gave a sharp nod. “I agree. Let’s take the detour.”
The convoy veered off the highway, heavy tires crunching onto the asphalt of the old meat processing plant. In the sweeping headlights, the compound emerged: a three-story brick office building, a massive steel warehouse, and a maze of wooden cattle pens stretching into the rear darkness.
Joanna peered through the glass, her eyes locking onto the pens. Excitement flared beneath her calm exterior. Time to see if I can score some live animals for our spatial storage.
Beside her, Briggs scanned the perimeter. “Will, secure the area.” Through the shifting darkness and shadows, about twenty zombies stumbled into the open lot, dressed in tattered business suits and shredded processing aprons. Talk about creepy vibes.
“I’ll use the skirmish to isolate Galen,” Briggs whispered, gripping his sidearm. “Once it’s clear, we interrogate him.”
Joanna shrugged, unbuckling her harness. “Works for me. I’m going to check out the back area where the
pens are.”
Briggs looked at her strangely. Playing with livestock during a tactical raid seemed bizarre, but noting her absolute certainty, he nodded. “Don’t get cornered.”
Joanna stepped down from the truck and walked to her van, tapping the glass. Julian rolled it down.
“Help the escort clear the zombies out here,” Joanna instructed. “I’m heading to the back to see if I can find any live animals.”
Before the team could respond, Joanna turned and vanished into the shadows toward the rear pens. Joanna vanished from the main parking lot in a silent blur, teleporting directly into the maze of wooden

pens at the rear of the facility. The moment her boots hit the dirt, an eerie, suffocating silence wrapped around her, far heavier than the noise of the skirmish out front.
The scene was a grim, horrific testament to the apocalypse. Dozens of massive Angus cows lay bloated and dead across the mud, their heavy black hides torn by scavengers or rotting under the cold night sky. The smell here was different-sharper, metallic, and deeply wrong.
Suddenly, the heavy wooden fencing groaned.
From the deepest shadows of the pens, seven massive black figures detached themselves from the dark They weren’t dead. They were stumbling forward on fractured hooves, their hollow eyes glowing with infected hunger. Their skin was sloughing off in patches, exposing raw muscle, and their massive jaws dripped with thick, black foam. Zombie Angus cows.
The lead creature let out a low, guttural roar-a sound completely unnatural for livestock-and charged, its massive bulk barreling straight toward her like a runaway freight train.
Joanna didn’t blink. Channeling her enhanced super strength, she planted her boots and waited until the beast was inches away. She brought her fist upward in a devastating uppercut, striking the zombie cow square beneath its jaw with a sound like a thunderclap. The sheer force of the impact launched the massive animal ten feet into the air, its neck snapping instantly before it crashed hard into the dirt, motionless.
The remaining six beasts stampeded simultaneously, closing the distance in a predatory rush.
Drawing her new sickle sword, Joanna shifted into a defensive stance. As two zombie cows closed in from her flanks, she teleported directly above them. She reappeared in mid-air, bringing the curved, wicked blade down in a clean, fluid arc. The enhanced edge sliced effortlessly through the neck of the second beast, decapitating it in a single motion. Landing smoothly back on the blood-slicked mud, she drove her heel directly into the ribcage of a third creature charging her from behind. The impact shattered its entire torso, sending the broken carcass sliding fifteen feet into the wooden fencing.
The last three zombie cows trapped her against the rear concrete wall of the warehouse, their massive heads lowering to gore her.
