Chapter 164 Alice My Dearest Younger Sister

They were back inside the high-rise apartment complex. Briggs steadied himself against a concrete pillar, watching the horizon turn a pale, bruised orange. Directly across the asphalt, the Evercrest Galleria sat dark and entirely stripped, a massive concrete trap waiting for Jax’s arrival.

Joanna tossed the heavy duffle bag to Briggs. Though thoroughly annoyed by what he considered meaningless jewels in an apocalypse, he hoisted it onto his back.

They quickly navigated the quiet streets back to City Hall. Inside the front lobby, the soldiers were waiting in tense silence, rifles ready.

Joanna turned to Briggs. “This next part is all you,” she said, her voice dropping into a steady command. “Once you guys deliver the message, have the convoy roll straight out of Eldon.”

She handed him a piece of paper with a scribbled location. “Take everyone to this address. We’ll meet you there.”

Briggs took the paper and handed it directly to Will, then turned his gaze back to Joanna. “I want to watch the show too, you know,” he said, a grim smirk touching his lips.

Joanna huffed a sharp laugh, shaking her head. “Fine. Let’s go back to that high-rise.”

She turned to Will, her tone snapping back into operational mode. “Contact me by radio once you’re cleared, Will. We will meet up with you after we clear the city.”

Will gave a firm, confident nod, gripping the paper tight. “Copy that. Stay safe boss.”

The morning sun finally broke over the horizon as Joanna and Briggs reached the high-rise. Bypassing the main doors, they entered the emergency stairwell, where Joanna quickly teleported them straight up to the roof.

They crept across the gravel toward a perfect viewing point overlooking the street and the mall below. Since they had a long wait before the trap would spring, Joanna decided to make their stakeout comfortable.

Waving her hand casually, a plush, full-sized sofa materialized out of nothingness right near the edge. Positioned perfectly, the couch kept them completely hidden from the street while allowing them to see everything below.

Briggs stopped dead, staring incredulously at the couch before dropping the heavy bag of jewelry. Even after watching her erase entire stores, seeing a living room sofa appear on a dusty rooftop made his mind glitch. He lowered himself onto the cushions, shaking his head. This storage space was truly incredible.

Joanna reached into the air, pulling out two large breakfast burritos wrapped in foil. They were radiating a

steady, comforting warmth. She handed one to Briggs.

Briggs blinked at the hot package, the unexpected heat thawing his frozen gloves. “It keeps things hot, too?”

Joanna nodded, sharing a small, rare smile. “Time stands still inside. If it goes in hot, it stays hot.” She glanced at the canvas bag of jewels. “I also learned that precious gems upgrade the space. They expand the boundaries and weight limits. It’s the only way to grow it.”

The tactical pieces finally clicked for Briggs. He took a bite, a sudden wave of respect washing away his

irritation over her reckless raid. She wasn’t chasing meaningless vanity; she was making a cold, necessary calculation to expand their operational capacity. “So the emerald statue is fuel for the fortress,” he

urmured, his tone softening.

“Exactly,” Joanna said, leaning back against the cushions. She turned her head, studying his battle-worn profile in the pale morning light: “What about you, Commander? You operate like a machine. What makes a deadly soldier like you tick?”

Briggs kept his sharp eyes on the mall gates below, but his shoulders relaxed slightly, a rare vulnerability creeping into his posture. “I’m not a politician, Joanna. I’m a weapon,” he said, his voice dropping into a low quiet rhythm. “High Command started treating my men like expendable assets and ignoring the people who mattered. I don’t care about the fallen system, and I don’t care about saving the world I only care about the soldiers under my command and their families.” He turned his cold gaze toward her, but the suspicion that usually guarded his eyes was gone. “I’m joining you because you can keep them alive.”

Joanna studied him in the quiet dawn. In a world full of betrayals and selfish scavengers, his fierce loyalty to his people resonated with her own absolute drive to survive. For the first time, she saw him not just as muscle for her kingdom, but as a partner she could actually trust.
