Chapter 167 Jax’s Battle At The Mall

ey’re trying to starve us!” the crowd roared, unleashing a chaotic wall of fire.

In the middle of the crossfire, Alice’s face contorted with calculated rage. Dodging a spray of bullets that shattered the concrete pillar beside her, she sprinted hard toward the back of the parking lot. She threw herself behind a sleek, black sedan with heavily tinted windows-Elliot’s getaway car.

Up on the roof, Joanna watched her sister reach safety, a tight knot of tension releasing in her chest.

Down below, the street became a war zone of muzzle flashes and screaming civilians. Realizing he was losing control of his ambush, Jax fired his chrome revolver into the air, his voice booming over the carnage.

“Screw the crowd!” Jax bellowed, ducking behind an armored SUV. “Grab Jensen and bust our way into the building! Get the supplies and kill anyone in the way!”

Forty of Jax’s soldiers smashed a towering glass window, pushing through the chaos into the mall. In the center of the surge, Elliot Jensen emerged, surrounded by a tight ring of ten security guards, rushing through the shards toward the back.

Outside, the street was pure carnage. Two of Jax’s men were cut down, their bodies slumping against the trucks. The remaining raiders used the vehicles as cover, firing back at the second-story windows where survivors were dropping several of Jax’s men from above.

Suddenly, the heavy doors of the loading dock blew open.

Elliot Jensen stumbled out into the pale light, his face completely drained of color. He was entirely empty- handed. No crates, no bags, nothing followed him.

He locked eyes with Jax across the parking lot, his breath coming in ragged gasps.

“Jax!” Elliot screamed over the deafening gunfire. “Something is very wrong!

Jax ducked behind an SUV as a bullet ricocheted off the hood, “Where is the winter gear, Jensen? Where are the crates?!”

“They’re gone!” Elliot yelled back, gesturing frantically toward the empty building. “The entire warehouse is a ghost town! Every coat, every ration-it’s all gone! There’s nothing left but dust!”

The revelation ripped through the crowd like wildfire. “They took everything!” a survivor screamed from a second-story window. “The raiders already cleaned out the warehouse!”

Hearing that their only survival had been stolen, the remaining civilians inside the mall lost all fear. Over a hundred more survivors flooded out of the broken storefronts and side exits, joining the fight with a desperate, feral fury. A wall of chaotic gunfire slammed into Jax’s perimeter, pinning his men against their own vehicles.

Jax’s face contorted with absolute rage. He looked at the swarming mob, then at Elliot’s pale face. He had been completely outsmarted, trapped in a pointless war with a starving population. Realizing his forces were about to be overrun, Jax opened his mouth to scream the order to retreat.

Before the words could leave his throat, a terrified shriek cut through the din from the eastern edge of the parking lot.

“Zombies! Incoming ghouls!” one of Jax’s soldiers screamed, his rifle shaking as he pointed toward the

tersection.

The relentless, minutes-long gun battle had acted as a massive dinner bell in the dead quiet of November. Emerging from the thick pine tree line and spilling off the highway, a wall of shuffling, groaning corpses was pouring into the street. The noise had drawn the horde, and now both the raiders and the rioting civilians were completely surrounded.

Alice threw herself behind the wheel of Elliot’s black sedan. She slammed the gas, drifting across the blood slicked asphalt to the loading dock where Elliot and his guards were fighting off the mob.

“Get in!” Alice screamed.

Elliot scrambled into the front seat. Five of his security guards tried to follow, but a brutal swarm of civilians cut them down instantly.

Seeing the swarming dead, Jax abandoned his troops to save his own skin. He ran straight for the sedan, tearing the back door open and throwing his massive frame inside. “Drive! Get us out of here now!”

Alice floored it, the sedan fishtailing through a wall of shuffling zombies. Behind them, Elliot’s remaining men fell one by one, torn apart by the relentless mob and the ravenous horde.

The sedan finally broke through the perimeter, speeding away into the dark and leaving the carnage

behind.

Over forty of Jax’s elite soldiers lay dead on the cold concrete, Smelling the fresh blood, the ocean of zombies swarmed the Evercrest Galleria like a wave of locusts. The gunfire rapidly died away, replaced by horrific screams echoing from inside the broken windows.
