Chapter 170 Briggs Fire Awakens

Loving the couple to scavenge, she and Briggs walked down the corridor toward the specific door the woman had pointed out. Joanna stood in front of it and gave a few loud, heavy knocks. When no one answered, she didn’t waste any time. Tapping into her physical power, she delivered a sharp kick that sent the door flying open.
They stepped inside, looking around. The apartment had obviously been ransacked sometime earlier, with drawers overturned and papers scattered across the floor. But other than being small, it was in a lot better shape than the last one-cleaner, free of the disgusting stench, and a safe enough place to finally hide from the freezing rain.
Briggs swept the interior with the precision of a seasoned soldier, checking every corner before moving a large cabinet against the broken door.
While he secured the perimeter, Joanna pulled out beef jerky, canned fruit, and a bottle of clear spring water. “This water should help you get your energy back,” she said. “Rest and eat this.”
Before he could ask questions, she pulled two buckets of steaming, warmed spring water, towels, and soap from her storage space. “Wash up here. I’m going to rest in the bedroom for an hour, and then we can leave.”
She stepped into the bedroom, shut the door, and immediately jumped into her hidden storage space to recover. Left alone, Briggs stared at the steaming water and the food as the freezing rain lashed against the windows.
Inside her hidden storage space, the silence was a relief, but Joanna’s blinding headache remained. She walked over to her hot spring and, knowing she was alone, stripped off her dirty clothes. She stepped inside, hissing as the hot water hit her skin, before easing in with a long sigh.
Because she couldn’t safely absorb her gems yet, this fatigue felt strange and abnormal. It wasn’t standard tiredness; it felt like her very power had been deeply drained.
After soaking for half an hour, she felt much better but not fully healed. She went into her villa, cleaned herself up, and changed into fresh clothes and a warmer jacket. Feeling significantly improved, she exited her space after an hour, materializing back in the dark bedroom.
Joanna opened the bedroom door and stepped back into the dim living area, only to stop dead in her tracks.
Briggs was standing by the rain-streaked window, looking much cleaner after utilizing the warm spring water. Half of the food she had left remained untouched on the table. As he turned around quickly to face her, his pupils were dilated, reflecting a strange, internal warmth.
“Something is different,” Briggs whispered, looking down at his trembling hands. A faint, orange glow began to crackle beneath his skin, and wisps of smoke rolled off his knuckles as the temperature in the room instantly spiked. He looked back up at Joanna, his breath hitching. “Something… is happening to me.”
As he took a step forward, the sheer heat radiating from his palms caused the moisture on his damp clothes to vaporize into steam. He was manifesting fire power.
Instead of panicking, a genuine smile spread across Joanna’s face. In this broken world, awakening a superpower was an incredibly rare and miraculous phenomenon.

“Congratulations, Briggs,” she said warmly, her voice filled with pride as she looked at his glowing hands. “You just awakened. We’re going to be a lot safer now.”
get your body strong for the trip,” Joanna said, stepping closer.
She pulled a handful of glowing zombie cores from her bag and laid them on the table. Briggs listened intently as she explained how to channel their raw energy into his newly awakened spark.
Briggs closed his eyes, holding a core tightly. After a little trial and error, he got the hang of it. He began absorbing them steadily, the orange glow beneath his skin burning brighter with each core consumed.
After twenty cores, Joanna stopped him.
“That’s enough,” she said, pulling the remaining stash back. “Your power will do better if you use it a lot to get the hang of it. Overloading won’t help if you can’t control the flame.”
Briggs opened his eyes, the exhaustion from the Eldon Galleria completely replaced by a deadly, controlled heat.
While Briggs finished up eating his rations, Joanna moved to the window and raised her binoculars, scanning the rain-slicked streets below.
