The rhythmic clack-clack-clack of a pneumatic impact wrench echoed through the private garage. Heavy steel squat racks were being bolted directly into the concrete floor.

Joanna watched the installers work, her arms crossed tight over her chest. We are going to war, she thought.

Every single morning from here on out would be a brutal gauntlet. She and Jolie would have to push their bodies to the absolute limit. There would be no days off. Hand-to-hand combat conditioning, blade work, endurance-they needed it all. Joanna honestly didn’t know if Jolie possessed the latent genetic markers required to awaken a superpower when the virus struck. But it didn’t matter. She was going to give her best friend a fighting chance to outlive her tragic original timeline.

Once the installers finished and the garage door rolled shut, Joanna cracked open her laptop. It was time for phase two: the digital black market.

She bypassed standard e-commerce sites, routing her connection through encrypted networks to find specialized agricultural syndicates selling heirloom seeds and agricultural flora.

“Ten mature specimens of every single known fruit- and vegetable-producing tree,” Joanna muttered to herself, typing rapidly. “Must withstand coastal and mountain climates. Include secondary backing rootstocks for grafting.”

Next came the bulk staples. She systematically added thousands of heirloom seed packets to her digital cart: cabbages, carrots, russet potatoes, sweet potatoes, hearty winter beans, and high-yield corn.

She opened an encrypted chat channel to her best friend.

Joanna: The agricultural orders are locked in. I need you on transit duty.

Jolie: Already? Where am I heading?

Joanna: I’m scheduling staggered pickup dates over the next few days. You’re going to fetch the supplies and distribute them across the different warehouses. We need to keep our footprint scattered.

Jolie: On it. I’ll prep the truck routes.

Joanna closed the chat, leaning back in her chair. The sheer volume of seeds she was purchasing wasn’t just emergency food-they were the genetic blueprint of her future empire. And thanks to her level-four pocket dimension, her agricultural experiments were already defying science. Just last night, she had buried standard tomato seeds in the fertile ground of her spatial soil. By morning, they hadn’t just sprouted; they were flourishing at an impossible,

She looked at her master checklist. There was still an endless list of tactical gear left to source, but she intentionally closed those tabs. She had to hold back her capital.

According to her memories of the future, the apocalypse would officially fracture the world during Thanksgiving weekend. Buying high-grade body armor, night-vision optics, and tactical communication arrays right now would immediately draw federal heat.

Let the major supply distributors handle the mass warehousing for me, she thought with a cold smile.

The moment the power grid died and society collapsed, she wouldn’t need a credit card. She would activate her twenty-five-foot long-range vacuum ability, walk right into the abandoned commercial depots, and effortlessly strip them clean. It would be entirely free, completely undetectable, and enough to feed her future base for years.

A heavy yawn caught her off guard. Joanna glanced at the bottom right corner of her screen. The digital clock read well past midnight.

With a sigh, she closed her laptop, rubbed her burning eyes, and slipped under the sheets. She was far too exhausted to cast her mind into the spatial villa tonight. The evaluation of her pocket dimension’s progress would simply have to wait until dawn.

Over the next few weeks, a clockwork routine took over their lives.

Mornings were loud, exhausting, and violent. Joanna and Jolie spent hours bloodied and bruised on the mats in the garage, conditioning their muscles and building muscle memory for the horrors of the coming dead zones.

“Keep your guard up!” Joanna would bark, parrying a training blade. “The infected won’t hesitate!”

“I’m trying!” Jolie gasped, wiping sweat and a smear of blood from her forehead, driving her weight forward into a counter-strike.

Afternoons shifted to pure logistics. While Jolie drove across the city handling supply runs and organizing incoming shipments, Joanna managed the heavy freight trucks, meeting specialized deliveries at her scattered warehouses to ensure no single location looked suspicious.

By evening, the action shifted to a commercial-grade kitchen Joanna had discreetly installed in the warehouse closest to their house.

“How are the numbers looking?” Joanna asked one evening, walking into the kitchen. The air smelled strongly of vinegar, brine, and boiled sugar.

Jolie wiped her hands on her apron and tapped her tablet screen. “Take a look for yourself. I’ve
