Chapter 212 Jake And His New Ride

Joanna looked behind her seeing Jake, Jolie, and Julian small smiles on their faces.

Jake blinked at the barren field, then looked at Joanna’s empty hand. “Well, that definitely beats renting a U-Haul.”

Joanna rolls her eyes, a smile touching her lips as she leads them to the edge of the barren field. “Wait in the villa, but keep your weapons on you. I might pull you out for a fight.”

They nod, and with a flicker of her will, they vanish. Alone, she faces west into the late afternoon light. Her jog becomes a sprint, and then she disappears from the road, already miles ahead.

This is the test she’s been waiting for. She breaks into a run, launching herself forward so the world blurs. A second jump, and the convoy is a memory. twenty five miles on, a six-car pileup blocks the road. She grips, the bumper of a rusted sedan and heaves, metal groaning as she hurls it into the ditch. The power thrumming through her is a satisfying hum. She clears two more cars before the last one stops her.

A bright red sports car sits mangled and bloody, its windows shattered. An idea forms. “Bringing you out,” she says into the villa com. An instant later, her team materializes, weapons raised for a battle that isn’t there. Seeing nothing, they lower their arms, their expressions shifting to bewilderment.

Joanna let out a short, sharp laugh as her team materialized, weapons half-raised. “Sorry,” she said, raising her own empty hands in a placating gesture. “Didn’t mean to startle you.” Their stances softened, muscles uncoiling. She jerked a thumb over her shoulder at the ruined vehicle behind her. “Cleared the roadblock and found this thing wedged under a semi. Pretty, isn’t it?” Jake’s gaze snapped from her face to the car, his eyes widening as he took in the low-slung silhouette, the familiar curves even beneath the dust and gore. “Joanna,” he breathed, stepping closer, his voice rough. “A 911. I’d only ever seen pictures. Pre-Collapse, this was… impossible.” He ran a hand through his hair, a disbelieving laugh escaping him. “To end up like this. What a waste.”

Julian picks up the side mirror hanging limply from the driver’s side. He turns the broken piece over in his hand, his expression unreadable. “I had one. Black. The acceleration was precise.” He drops the mirror, the clatter sharp in the quiet.

Joanna rolls her eyes. “It’s not really practical, but the keys are still in the ignition. So, Jake, would you like it?”

“Jolie’s eyes light up. “Boss, you can renew it, right?” The men share a look of understanding, and Jake’s grin widens. “Do I want this? Of course!”

A breath later, they are standing on the dirt outside her warehouse, the ruined Porsche hulking between them in the afternoon light-glass ground into the soil, the hood folded back on itself like a crushed can. Julian crouches beside it, running two fingers along a deep gash in the door panel without touching it. want to see this,” he says quietly.

Joanna looks at the car. She gathers the intention the way she gathers everything, from somewhere below thought, and says: “Renew.”

The metal remembers itself. Creases climb back into smooth curves, the windshield rebuilds from nothing, the red deepening to a lacquer so clean it throws back their reflections.

Chapter 212-Jake And His New Ride

Finished

Jake is already circling the car, dragging a hand along the hood. “When can I drive it?” He doesn’t wait for an answer before walking to the door. His whole face has gone loose and open, like he’s forgotten to be cool about anything.

Joanna tilts her head. “Wanna race? ten miles. Let’s see if you’re faster than me.”

Julian’s hands come together with a single sharp clap. “Shotgun.”

Jolie takes a step back, arms folded as she stares at Jake, who is currently vibrating with an expression that borders on absolute madness.

“Yeah, I’m out,” Jolie said, shaking her head. “Look at his eyes, He looks like a raccoon that just found a mountain of caffeine and a loaded weapon. I am not getting in a vehicle with someone that unhinged.”

Joanna materializes beside the restored Porsche. “Give me a minute to clear the road.” She gestures for Jake to get in, then blinks forward half a mile. A semi lies jackknifed, an ambulance crushed beneath it. The stench of decay hits her first-the bloated corpse of the driver is still strapped in his seat. Wrinkling her nose, she grabs the truck’s chassis. Metal shrieks as she dredges the wreck into the ditch, clearing the path. The rest of the road was open for the race. Another blink, and she’s back beside the Porsche, the air still fasting of rot.

Jolie raises her comm and frames the shot-Jake spread across the hood of the Porsche like he’s on a beach somewhere, arms behind his head, the lacquered red blazing under the afternoon light-and sends it to the group chat. Allen’s voice comes through almost instantly. “Is that a 911? That is a 911. Someone tell me where you are right now.” Briggs’s reply is immediate and toneless: “This channel is for operational use only.” He is answered by six people talking at once. Jake says in the comm toward him “Boss found it wrecked,” as he rubbed his hand over the wheel “She renewed it.” A brief, collective silence. Then Kailee starts talking about the engine.

Joanna speaks into the comm, a smirk in her voice. Relax, everyone. Car shopping is later. I’m busy.”

A flurry of messages floods the private channel.
