He sank back into the chair with agonizing slowness, his eyes tracking her every movement as she pulled a bottle of antiseptic, clean gauze, and fresh medical tape out of the vacuum of thin air.
“How did you do that?” he whispered, his voice completely stripped of its usual bravado.
“It’s a storage space,” Joanna explained smoothly, her hands already at work breaking the seal on the antiseptic. “I can store physical items inside a pocket dimension and pull them out with my mind.”
Fletcher shook his head, looking at her as if she were a monster straight out of a nightmare. He was a man who understood physical violence, but this defied every law of reality he had ever known.
Seeing the sheer terror painted across his young, unhardened face, Joanna let out a soft laugh. It was a bizarre sensation; in her dreams of the future, she was always the one looking at him with fear and submission. Experiencing the exact opposite dynamic was intoxicating.
Saying nothing else, she gently unraveled the bloody towel from his wrist and began cleaning the raw, jagged gunshot wound.
Joanna kept her focus on his hand, her fingers moving with deft efficiency as she cleaned the torn skin and gave him several stitches. Quietly she poured some of her spring water on the wound knowing it would help heal everything faster. Fletcher’s eyes never left her face. In the warm, flickering glow of the lanterns, he found her striking-a dangerous, captivating presence in the middle of a broken world. He swallowed hard, his adam’s apple bobbing in his throat.
“How do you know I can overtake my enemies in the city?” he asked, his voice coming out gruff and thick.
Joanna reached into the air again, pulling out a roll of clean gauze. She began wrapping his hand with precise, firm strokes, never looking up to meet his gaze.
“I know you will become one of the most feared fighters in this fallen world,” she said flatly. “Anyone left in this city will pay for your protection. I also know you are ruthless, controlling, and very territorial.”
Fletcher frowned, a strange mixture of emotions churning behind his eyes. On one hand, he felt entirely stripped bare, as if she had just laid out every hidden flaw and dark impulse he possessed for the world to see. On the other, he felt an intense, magnetic pull toward her. She knew exactly how dangerous and flawed he was, yet she sat there patching him up, completely unbothered by any of it.
Joanna pulled a bottle of ice-cold water and a small pack of Tylenol from her storage space, handing them to him.
Fletcher stared at the condensation forming on the plastic. “How is it cold?”
He didn’t wait for an answer. He tossed back the pills and drank deeply. The water was clear, crisp, and fresh-a luxury that simply did not exist anymore.
Joanna left the extra supplies on the table and stood up. “Do you want a doctor to come?”
Fletcher flexed his freshly bandaged hand, testing the grip. He shook his head. “No, I should be fine. Thanks,” he replied quietly. He looked up, his focus shifting back to business. “Now, you have Eric? Alive or dead?”

Joanna smiled, a sharp, knowing expression. “Knowing you, Fletcher, I left them alive. My men are military, so don’t bother them when they arrive in the next few days. I will take you downstairs to get your prisoners, and then I’ll be on my way.”
Without waiting for his response, Joanna turfred and walked out of the room. The two guards at the door immediately fell into step behind them as she and Fletcher descended back to the lobby.
When they stepped out of the front entrance, the dark street was quiet, save for a crackling hiss. Julian was leaning casually against the sedan, one hand resting on the hood. A lone zombie stumbled toward him from the shadows. With a flick of his fingers, Julian sent a bright arc of electricity snapping through the air. The bolt struck the dead man dead-center, dropping him instantly to the asphalt where several other smoking corpses already lay.
Julian was clearly just passing the time out of pure boredom..
Seeing him, Joanna let out a soft sigh. He is always flashy without even trying.
She was too focused on her teammate to notice Fletcher and his guards. Behind her, the three men had frozen on the steps, staring at Julian in utter, unadulterated horror. Their minds raced, trying to process the impossible display. What did they just see? He shoots electricity?
The three women scrambled out of the sedan the moment they saw Fletcher. One rushed straight into the arms of the guard from the lobby, their shared features marking them as siblings.
Joanna motioned for her crew to step away from the vehicles. “Keep the car, Fletcher. Thanks for your cooperation.”
Fletcher’s intense gaze burned into hers. “Maybe you should check in with me before you go to the north side? I can help clear the area.”
