Chapter 224 Briggs In Time Out

Finished

The zombie lunged toward Jolie, snapping through the vines. Seeing her teammate frozen in shock as the monster pushed through hor trap, Joanna lunged forward, grabbing Jolie by the jacket to yank her back. But the shockwave of the zombie’s heavy footstep caught Joanna off balance, pushing her hard to the ground.

From the idling vehicle, the roar of an engine drowned out the chaos. Briggs wasn’t about to sit by, he slammed his foot on the gas.

He drove the beast straight into the giant level-three zombie, pitting it directly against the monster and against another wrecked vehicle on the road. The impact was deafening-a crunch of metal and breaking glass as the collision trapped the massive creature. The tactical pinning maneuver successfully neutralized the zombie’s mobility, buying a crucial minute of time for everyone to fall back and regain their footing.

Inside the wreckage, Briggs kicked his jammed door open. Turning back he barked an order. “Caleb, stay inside!”

Briggs crawled out of the vehicle and immediately unleashed his fire power, cloaking his fists in roaring flames. The level-three strength zombie managed to break free from the metal trap, pushing itself up heavily bruised, furious, and ready to turn its wrath on Briggs.

Julian ran over, grabbing Joanna and pulling her back to her feet. The moment her boots gripped the asphalt, Joanna assessed the battlefield and took command. Her voice rang out over the noise of the combat. “Kill the other zombies! Leave the level-three for me!”

She drew her sickle sword, the curved blade gleaming under the gray sky. Joanna didn’t hesitate. She threw herself into a brutal, high-speed assault.

Pop. She teleported directly above the beast, bringing her sickle sword down in a vicious arc. The blade cut deep into its shoulder, but the monster backhanded her mid-air with terrifying strength. Joanna absorbed ( the blow, her enhanced durability keeping her bones intact as she hit the ground rolling.

Pop. She disappeared again just as the monster’s fist shattered the asphalt where she had been standing. Appearing right at its flank, she channeled every ounce of her physical strength, driving the curved blade behind its knee to sever the tendon. The giant buckled to one knee, roaring in agony.

Joanna teleported directly onto its massive shoulders. Wrapping one arm around its neck for leverage, she drove her sickle sword straight through the top of its skull.

The level-three strength zombie shuddered, its eyes rolling back as life finally left its massive frame. It crashed heavily onto the road, lifeless.

With the level 3 destroyed, the rest of the crew let loose on the remaining threats. Bolts of lightning, razor- sharp wind currents, and crushing earth vines tore through the remaining twenty zombies, wiping them out in a matter of seconds.

The road fell silent again, save for the ticking of Briggs’s ruined engine and the heavy breathing of the squad.

Caleb climbed out of the car wreck looking more wrecked than anyone else, rubbing his bruised arm and coughing through the rising smoke. Briggs let out a heavy huff but said nothing to him.

Instead, Briggs crossed the road in a few short steps, his focus locked entirely on Joanna. The cold, hardened aura he usually wore was instantly replaced by a look of tender concern.

“Are you alright?” he asked Joanna softly.

She nodded and offered a grateful smile. “Quick thinking, Briggs. Pinning the monster down was exactly what I needed to finish it.”

He said nothing in reply, but he stared deeply into her eyes for a long, quiet second before collecting himself. Shaking off the moment, he turned his attention back to his pinned vehicle, which was still wedged tightly against the roadside wreckage.

“It definitely got banged up,” Briggs muttered, running a hand over the crumpled hood. “But the fact that this vehicle is still in one piece tells you how exceptional it is.”.

Joanna only smiled. “Don’t worry about it,” she said, waving off the concern. With a brief shimmer of energy, she pulled the battered vehicle into her storage space, and a few seconds later, pulled it out again. “I hit renew on it.”

The vehicle materialized back on the asphalt, completely flawless without a single scratch or dent. Jake ran over and eagerly hugged the front bumper. “Yes! Your storage space is terrifying and beautiful Boss! I love you, Beastie, so much.”

Joanna rolled her eyes at his antics, shifting her focus back to the task at hand. “Let’s hydrate and figure out what is going on.”

She waved her hand, summoning the loot from the battle. She held out several level-two cores and one noticeably larger level-three core, showing them off to the gathering group. “This is the first time I’ve ever seen a level-three core. In my dream, I never got near one since they were all taken by high-level ability

users.”

The level-three core was significantly larger than the others, pulsing with a much denser, more vibrant energy. Jolie leaned closer to inspect the polished, iridescent surface. “Boss, it looks like an opal.”
