Chapter 231 Jessica Lumley

Joanna frowned, herjaw tightening as she-turned toward the stairs. Couldn’t she just relax for one single day in this apocalypse?
She walked quickly back up to the foyer, the rest of the crew trailing right behind her. Approaching the makeshift monitoring station, she leaned over Kailee’s shoulder to look directly at the glowing tablet
screen.
“What do we have, Kailee?” Joanna asked, her eyes narrowing at the live feed.
Kailee zoomed in on the left monitor, enhancing the playback, “Look here,” she said, tapping the glass. “A lone woman has walked past the front gates three times since we arrived. Each time, she slows down and stares directly through the security bars.”
The camera feed showed a woman wrapped in a heavy, insulated winter coat. It was caked in road grime and ash, but the tailored cut and premium brand logo still screamed pre-apocalypse wealth.
Briggs leaned forward over Joanna’s shoulder, his eyes locked on the screen with a hard, unreadable. expression. He cut a sharp glance toward Julian.
“Is she another one of your fans, Julian?” Briggs asked, his voice dripping with cool sarcasm.
Julian’s face went entirely rigid as he stared at the screen. He stepped closer, his eyes narrowing at the grainy playback.
“She’s a neighbor,” Julian said, his voice flat. “Jessica Lumley. Her father and I were close business partners on several tech projects before the collapse.”
Briggs straightened up, his sarcastic smirk vanishing instantly, replaced by his usual cold, tactical focus. “A wealthy neighbor surviving alone in the suburbs right outside Tech Valley? That doesn’t happen by
accident.”
“I’ll handle it,” Julian said. He grabbed his coat and headed out the front door toward the heavy security gates.
Back in the foyer, the entire crew shamelessly crowded around the monitoring station, their eyes glued to the glowing screen.
Jolie and RJ snickered to each other, nudging shoulders as they watched Julian’s sleek silhouette cut through the morning mist toward the lone woman.
“How much you want to bet she clings to the billionaire CEO the second he opens that gate?” Jolie. whispered with a grin.
RJ chuckled softly, crossing her arms. “I bet five cans of tuna she immediately demands entrance and tries to force her way into our group.”
Joanna rolled her eyes at their antics, but her sharp gaze never left the tablet.
On screen, Julian reached the heavy perimeter bars. Jessica Lumley froze, her eyes widening in pure shock as she recognized the man stepping out of the immaculate mansion.

Jake, usually quiet and fiercely protective, suddenly reached into his tactical vest and pulled out a large, crinkling bag of barbecue potato chips. He popped it open with a loud snap, offering them to Jolie and RJ.
Within seconds, the entire crew was huddled around the tablet, crunching loudly and snacking while their eyes stayed locked on the live feed.
“Do you think they used to date?” Jake asked quietly, his eyes fixed on the screen.
“Oh, absolutely,” Jolie said around a mouthful of chips. “Look at the drama in her posture.”
As the group continued to speculate and trade bets, the screen showed Julian inputting his security code. The heavy iron gate swung open with a low hum. Jessica gasped, her hands flying to her mouth before she practically threw herself toward him. Julian deftly kept a polite distance, nodding firmly as he gestured for her to follow him.
He closed the gate behind them and began leading the shivering woman back up the long driveway toward the mansion entrance.
“Called it!” Jolie hissed triumphantly, snapping her fingers at RJ. “She definitely tried to hug him!”
The front door clicked, and the heavy security locks disengaged as Julian and Jessica stepped into the foyer.
