The shadows of the jagged peaks were just beginning to stretch as the convoy finally crested the final ridge in the early afternoon. The heavy tactical vehicle rolled to a gentle stop, its engine idling with a deep, victorious hum as the expansive horizon opened up before them.

Joanna stepped out of the Beast, the crisp mountain air immediately biting at her face, but she barely felt the cold. She walked to the edge of the rocky overlook and gazed down at the breathtaking landscape below

Nestled perfectly in front of the looming, razor-sharp jagged mountain peaks of Evercrest was a sprawling series of rolling foothills, giving way to a massive, shallow valley. The layout was a tactical masterpiece of nature. The towering, ice-capped peaks formed an impenetrable wall in the back, while the gentle slopes of the foothills in the front provided the perfect elevated terrain for a sprawling base. The unique geometry of the landscape acted as a colossal natural fortress, completely shielding the lower basin from harsh wasteland winds and keeping the area far enough from the steep inclines to avoid any threat of seasonal avalanches.

Joanna looked out at the foothills and the shallow valley with pure happiness.

A soft smile broke across her face, a wave of profound relief washing over her. When she had first mapped out this hidden sanctuary months ago, her vision had been small, insular, and defensive. She had fully expected to live a quiet, isolated life here with only a handful of people tucked away from the dying world.

But plans change.

She looked back over her shoulder at the massive line of roaring convoy trucks, the hundreds of survivors checking their gear, and her fiercely loyal inner circle stepping out of the vehicle beside her. Instead of a lonely hiding spot, she was looking at the foundation of a civilization. The sheer scale of the foothills and the valley below was magnificent; even with their numbers multiplied a hundred times over, this spot could easily support a real, large-scale base. They could build greenhouses across the slopes, fortify the natural chokepoints between the hills, and carve out a permanent, thriving home.

“Not a bad view, Boss,” Jake said, leaning against the hood of the Beast with a grin, his eyes reflecting the pale afternoon sun.

“It’s perfect,” Joanna whispered, her eyes shining as she looked back out at their new world. “Let’s build a

home.”

She called Levi and Will over, ordering them to bring all the water, earth and metal-powered humans to the front to break ground. She then sent the soldiers to scout the surrounding foothills for threats, commanding them to retreat if anything was too large to handle.

She assigned Kailee, Uncle Nate, Julian, RJ, and Briggs to lead the squads. Because these core members were her blood partners, they shared a seamless, permanent mental link with her. With our blood bond, your lines to me are completely open, Joanna broadcasted directly into their minds. If your teams hit trouble, send a thought. I’ll pick it up and teleport us to you instantly.

The squads fanned out into the ridges as a massive group of earth and metal manipulators marched up the hill, ready to reshape the land.

Joanna called the water users forward, including Nana and Willow, instructing them to clear the mountain snow from the terrain. Moving in a synchronized rhythm, the group quickly melted and cleared away fifteen acres of thick snow in every direction. Winter was fast approaching, but luckily the ground hadn’t

frozen solid yet, leaving the dirt soft and workable.

the mist cleared, Willow and Nana jogged over to her, their eyes bright with excitement. “Boss, did you know about the underground water source here?” Nana asked.

Joanna looked up from her mental cataloging, surprised. “You mean the river running through the lower valley?”

“No!” Willow exclaimed, shaking her head. “It’s deep underground, right below where we’re standing. The pressure is perfect. We can easily build a massive well here to supply the entire base.”

The two water users led Joanna down the slope, pointing out the exact coordinates where their elemental senses could feel the heavy rushing current deep within the earth.

She picked up a large, distinct boulder with her super strength and set it down firmly to mark the location. “Great job, both of you. This is a game-changer.”

With the snow gone, the pristine steel hatch of Joanna’s primary underground bunker was finally exposed looking exactly as it had when she planted it months ago.

Jake walked up beside her, staring down at the foothills. “If we dig back against the hill, we can connect the other underground bunkers completely underground,” he suggested, his mind already mapping out the military layout.

Joanna nodded, her thoughts aligning perfectly with his. “I was thinking the same thing. I also want a row of shipping containers buried underground to act as automated storage and a secret escape route out of the base for the soldiers and families. If the base ever falls, I might not have the capacity to teleport everyone at

once.”

“Understood,” Jake said. “We’ll build a failure-proof bottleneck.”

They immediately directed Allen and the earth-powered users to the west foothill, where the crew began shifting tons of soil to dig out a massive, reinforced subterranean tunnel.

Meanwhile, Joanna cracked open the heavy hatch of her main bunker. The air inside rushed out, cool and perfectly preserved. She called Danielle and her team over, sending them down into the facility to unpack and organize rations so a hot meal would be waiting when the workers needed a break. Leaving them to it, Joanna turned back to the sprawling foothills to oversee the rest of the layout.

Joanna had hundreds of shipping containers thanks to her meticulous prepping, and they were finally getting some real use. She began pulling them out of her storage space, planting them systematically directly into the open ground. Within just two hours, the vast majority of the underground planning and structural placement was completely finished.
