Chapter 302 You Have Level 3 Ability Users

Finished

The woman who had invited them along earlier lowered a sharpened piece of rebar, her aggressive posture melting into sheer relief when she recognized Joanna’s high ponytail. “Oh, it’s just you guys,” she gasped, her breath pluming in the freezing air. “We thought you were another team trying to jump our claim. You made it past the street corner already?”

A young man with a wary, suspicious gaze barked at the woman from their group. “Wendy, don’t tell me you want to team up with them?”

Wendy looked back, her expression tight but determined. “Edward, we have safety in numbers. We can split anything down the middle.”

The other woman in their group sneered, shivering under her thin rags. “Edward can’t carry everyone. How many abilities users do they have?”

Briggs stepped forward, his linebacker frame looming over them as he spoke in a cold, commanding voice. “My team is plenty strong at level three. I have fire, Joanna has strength, RJ and Will was a soldier who can hold his own in a fight.” He deliberately hid RJ’s telepathic skill.

The other group looked completely shocked. The nasty woman swallowed hard, her previous hostility instantly draining away as she looked at them with wide eyes. “You… you have level three ability users?”

She glanced nervously at Edward before looking back down at the floor. “Edward has an earth ability at level two, and I have a water ability at level one.”

Wendy stared at them with a penetrating stare, her eyes sharp and analytical as if trying to see right through their disguises. She blinked, and the look was gone. She smiled friendly again and said, “So many high ability users in one team… Come on, the laundromat is one block up. After that, we take the apartment building next to it. We can split up afterwards.”

Joanna paused, her tactical instincts immediately flaring up. Her approachable expression didn’t change, but her mind raced with suspicion.

Why do they want us there for the first part? Joanna thought, her inner alarm bells ringing. Was there something hidden in Wendy’s friendly invitation?

“I am Wendy,” the woman introduced herself, her smile a tight, practiced curve that didn’t reach her watchful eyes. She gestured with a grimy hand toward a scowling young man leaning on a crowbar. “That is Edward.” Her finger moved to a shivering woman wrapped in thin, frayed rags. “Samantha.” Finally, she nodded toward two lanky figures with identical wary stances, their knuckles white where they gripped their pipes. “And Chase and Cory are brothers.”

After they drank, both teams moved out. The weather was brutal when they first left the apartment freezing wind, sharp ice, slippery pavement – but as they pressed on the clouds parted and the sun broke through. Now the wind dropped to a strong breeze, and the icy glare softened.

Suddenly, the new quiet was broken by guttural snarls.

Six zombies lunged wildly from shattered storefronts and dark alleyways, their decaying limbs swinging through the air.

True to their cover, Joanna’s team held back their true power, intentionally making their movements look

heavy and unpolished. Briggs threw a localized, low-intensity burst of fire that scorched a zombie’s chest, slowing it down just enough for Joanna to shatter its skull with a calculated, seemingly max-effort strike.

ide them, RJ used a minor telepathic stumble to throw another undead off balance, allowing Will to step in with his military precision, driving a metal spike through its eye socket. In total, Joanna’s team skillfully and messily dispatched four of the creatures.

Meanwhile, Wendy’s team handled the remaining two. Edward grunted, raising a chunk of earth from the asphalt to crush the legs of one zombie, while Samantha splashed a stream of water that instantly slicked the ground beneath the monster’s feet, causing it to slip. Chase and Cory rushed forward together, using heavy pipes to bash the skulls of the incapacitated targets until they stopped moving.

As the brief skirmish ended, the survivors stood in the fresh sunlight, quickly harvesting the cores from the fallen bodies.

Samantha wiped a splatter of dark fluids from her sleeve and looked over at Joanna’s crew, her breathing still a bit shallow. “How many cores did you get?” she asked, her tone a mix of curiosity and standard apocalyptic auditing.

Joanna reached into the pocket of her oversized jacket, casually rolling the small crystals between her fingers before looking up. “Three level twos and one level one,” she replied smoothly, keeping her voice light and unbothered.

Cory spoke up from beside his brother, wiping sweat from his forehead despite the cold air. “We got two level twos.”

Edward let out a tight, dry breath that looked like a puff of smoke in the winter sun. “That brings our collective total to five level twos. It’s a solid start, but Brad is still going to lock us out if we don’t find the rest before the sun drops again.”

Wendy smiled encouragingly, though her sharp eyes lingered on the ease with which Joanna’s group had handled their targets. “See? I told you we have safety in numbers. Let’s keep moving. The laundromat is just at the end of this block, and that apartment building next to it should have plenty more.”
