Instead of grabbing Will, Joanna’s fingers buried deep into the thick, glossy fur of the mid-air predator. The dimensional tear snapped shut instantly. It was too late.

The freezing, dark kitchen vanished. In a flash of ambient light, Joanna and the roaring fifty-pound apex predator both crashed violently onto the lush green grass of her peaceful storage dimension.

Inside the villa, Julian turned from the couch, looking out at the window while still holding the television remote. His jaw went completely slack as his flawless, relaxed demeanor shattered. He stared through the glass at the snarling, massive beast that had just materialized in his pristine sanctuary.

Joanna stood a foot away with a worried frown, staring down at the massive ball of fur. “How did I get that fat cat in here?”

The cat froze, a completely dazed look washing over its face. The vibrant green grass and warm, ambientair of the pocket dimension seemed to short-circuit its predatory instincts. Slowly, it sat down.

Joanna stared warily. Did my space just tame it like it tamed Piper? she wondered.

The fifty-pound beast blinked, sitting perfectly still on the ground, still looking utterly bewildered by the sudden shift in reality. Suddenly, its throat vibrated, and it spoke in a deep, rumbling cat growl.

“Where am I?”

Joanna jumped backward, her hatchet raised instinctively. “You can speak?!”

From the villa window, Julian’s remote control slipped from his hand, clattering loudly against the floorboards as he stared out at the lawn in absolute disbelief.

“Yes, I have been feeding on mutated beasts for months,” the giant cat rumbled, its deep voice vibrating through the grass. “I started speaking a few months ago. Now… I feel strange. Lady… why do I feel affection for you? I was going to eat you and the sweaty man. What is going on?”

Joanna slowly lowered the head of her hatchet, her worried frown softening into an amused smirk. The mystical energy of her storage space had clearly worked its magic on the beast’s mind, locking its loyalty directly to her.

“You’re in my space, fat cat,” Joanna said, stepping closer with a relaxed grin. “And out here, I’m the one who provides the meals. If you want to keep feeling that cozy affection, you’re going to have to work for it.”

The door to the villa clicked open, and Julian stepped out onto the porch, looking thoroughly rattled. “Joanna,” he called out, his elegant demeanor cracking. “First a mutated pulsor plant that dry humps Briggs, and now this? Don’t even get me started on Dante and the stupid flirting federation!”

The cat’s ears twitched at Julian’s voice, its massive head turning to analyze him with those bright yellow eyes. “The shiny man talks too much,” the cat growled lowly, before looking back up at Joanna. “But the grass is warm. I will stay.”

“You don’t have a choice,” Joanna laughed, though her face suddenly fell as reality snapped back into place. Will.

She had completely left her defenseless, superpowerless teammate alone in the dark kitchen.

“Look, we are bonded now,” Joanna declared, her tone leaving no room for argument as she stared down the

-pound feline. “Any person, plant, or animal in here are off-limits.”

The fat cat flicked his thick, striped tail as if annoyed, his yellow eyes narrowing slightly. “Even the peacock male on the porch?”

Julian let his electricity shoot out of his hand onto the ground, blue sparks sizzling sharply against the grass. He fixed the overgrown tabby with an icy glare and made a snide comment. “If that oversized/hairball thinks I’m on the menu, I’ll happily turn him into a fifty-pound rug before he can even blink.”

Joanna rolled her eyes, turning back toward the porch. “Julian, feed the fat cat anything he wants for now.”

Before Julian could even begin to register his sheer disgust at being given pet-sitting duties, Joanna snapped herself right out of her storage dimension..

The transition was instant. The cozy warmth vanished, replaced by the freezing, dark air of the second floor. Joanna materialized right back in the dusty kitchen, her hatchet raised and ready for a fight.

Inside the room, Briggs and RJ were already there, standing over Will with their weapons drawn. Will was still pale, trying to explain the vanishing fifty-pound feline, when Joanna popped back into existence.

“Boss!” Will gasped in pure relief, gesturing wildly to the empty counter. “Where did the giant monster cat go?!”

“It’s handled,” Joanna whispered sharply, stepping closer to her squad and adjusting her high ponytail. “The cat won’t be bothering us anymore. What’s the status?”

Before Briggs could report, the floorboards above them groaned loudly. The muffled sounds of slamming doors and running footsteps from Edward’s group on the third floor suddenly turned frantic. A distant, muffled scream cut through the ceiling.

The twenty-five zombies RJ had detected upstairs were officially awake, and Edward’s squad had just walked right into the nest.

Briggs spoke up, a small fireball glowing from his hand to cast flickering shadows across the kitchen walls. “Edward’s group made too much noise. They ended up drawing out the zombies from the upper hallways. One of the brothers just screamed.”

RJ’s eyes sharpened under her heavy scarf as her mental thread tightened. “There are three level fours coming downstairs,” she spoke up, her voice tense. “One is currently on the fifth floor, and the other two are higher up but moving fast.”

Joanna sighed, adjusting her grip on her hatchet as she calculated the tactical layout. Maintaining their low- level cover while keeping the other survivors alive to report back to Brad required absolute precision.

“I will teleport to the fifth floor and kill the level four zombie closest to them,” Joanna commanded, her approachable look completely vanishing into lethal authority. “You guys head up to the others and tell Wendy that you will hold off the rest of them.”

Briggs snuffed out the fireball in his hand with a heavy grunt of agreement. “Understood, Boss.”

With a sharp nod, Joanna focused her mind on the layout, instantly tearing through space to teleport straight up to the dark, freezing stairwell of the fifth floor.
