Chapter 330 About To Kiss

Caleb leaned toward Joanna without taking his eyes off the two men, his voice a bare whisper. “This tense situation is weird.”
“Yeah,” Joanna murmured back, tilting her head. “They look like they’re about to kiss.”
The words landed in the frozen silence like a dropped plate.
Both men went rigid. Slowly, almost mechanically, they turned their heads toward the two people watching them. Then they saw what Joanna and Caleb saw: two powerful men, one hand fisted in a jacket, an inch of air between their faces, locked in a strange and unmistakable embrace.
Fletcher recoiled as if the jacket had burned him. He shoved Glacier away hard, and Glacier stumbled back a step, coughing into his fist as the frost along the desk began to crackle and
retreat.
“It’s not like that, Demoness!” Glacier snapped, color creeping up his neck.
Fletcher’s jaw clenched. “Don’t say it like I’m the one who has to be told.” His strength surged through him, and he crossed the gap in two strides, seized Glacier by the front of his coat, and lifted him clean off the floor. He threw him back into the chair, which skidded a foot across the polished floor.
Glacier hit the seat with a grunt, the breath knocked out of him. He glared up through the frost in his hair, but the corner of his mouth twitched despite himself.
Caleb pressed his lips together, shoulders shaking, and studied the ceiling with great interest.
Joanna pinched the bridge of her nose. “Are we done?” she asked, her voice flat. “Because we came here to talk about the end of your city, and I’d like to get to that before one of you breaks the desk.”
“My desk,” Fletcher muttered, and dropped into the chair opposite Glacier, still glaring.
Joanna rolled her eyes and let the last of the tension drain out of her shoulders. “We’re here because we found out which faction is coming,” she said, folding her hands on the edge of the desk.
Fletcher didn’t answer right away. He pulled a bottle of whisky from a drawer and set out three glasses with a clink, pouring each with a practiced hand. He slid one across the polished wood to Joanna, then another to Caleb, and kept the third for himself. His gaze drifted to Glacier and settled there, flat and thoroughly annoyed. A long moment passed. Then, with the air of a man doing something against his better judgment, he pulled out a fourth glass, filled it, and shoved it across the desk hard enough that Glacier had to catch it before it slid off the edge.

“Don’t thank me,” Fletcher said.
“Wouldn’t dream of it,” Glacier replied, and took a sip.
Fletcher leaned back, swirling the amber liquid. “I met Jake when he rolled through here. He gave me the update.” His eyes narrowed. “You really think they’re going to hit Dillon in a month?”
Caleb smiled over the rim of his glass. “More like two or three.”
“Two or three months,” Joanna confirmed with a nod. Her expression sharpened. “That’s why we’re here. We need to limit which parts of the city they can enter. Once the wall is built, we control the direction they come from, and we can be ready and waiting.”
“Ready,” Fletcher repeated. “With what?”
“That’s the problem.” Joanna’s voice dropped. “This faction has hundreds of men and a lot of weapons. We took a whole arsenal off them, and they still have more.”
The room went quiet. Ice clinked softly in Glacier’s glass, and Fletcher stared down into his whisky, the exhaustion on his face suddenly looking a lot more like calculation.
Fletcher took a slow sip and let the silence stretch. “So technically,” he said, “Glacier is here to beg me for a favor.”
Glacier stiffened again, his glass halting halfway to his mouth, and frost began to feather across the rim. He opened his mouth, but Joanna cut in first, her voice cool and level.
“If they succeed in Dillon, Westridge will fall next.”
