Chapter 333 Her Base Was Thriving!

The four of thenrate inside the villa, crowded around the long kitchen table. Caleb had reappeared with his duffel slung over one shoulder, and he leaned toward Fletcher with a conspiratorial grin. “Fun fact about Bubbles… He loves rabbits.”

Fletcher paused with a forkful of roast halfway to his tnouth. “Rabbits.”

“Loves them. Chases them for fun, and then…”

A hiss cut through the kitchen. Mr. Bubbles had appeared on the bench beside Joanna, ears/flat, fur puffed. “I told you to call me The Lord of Destruction!” he snarled at Caleb.

Caleb raised both hands in surrender. “Right, right. My mistake. The Lord of Destruction loves rabbits.”

Mr. Bubbles gave him a long, withering stare. Then, apparently satisfied that his dignity had been restored, he hopped into Joanna’s lap, turned around twice, and began making biscuits against her thighs, kneading with slow, blissful pushes of his enormous paws. A stream of tiny, happy meows escaped him.

Fletcher red at the sight. “That is the same creature that tried to eat me.”

wasn’t going to eat you,” Joanna said, scratching behind the tabby’s ears. “He said so.”

Fletcher ate steadily and in near silence after that, and after his second helping of roast and warm bread, the lines around his eyes seemed to ease. Glacier ignored all of them with great dignity, though he refilled Fletcher’s plate once without being asked. Nobody mentioned it.

When the last dish was cleared, Joanna gently lifted Mr. Bubbles off her lap, earning an offended little mew, and stood to brush off her hands. “Alright. Time to go.”

She gathered the three men with a sweep of her arm, and the warm villa folded away. The frozen wasteland returned, gray and biting after the softness of her space. Caleb pulled his hood up with a groan. Fletcher squared his shoulders, and Glacier scanned the horizon with a practiced eye.

“Ride out,” Joanna said. “Get to Dillon, start on the materials and the men. I’ll be there soon.” She looked at each of them in turn. “Keep each other safe.”

Then she was gone.

She moved in a series of quick jumps, the world blinking past in flashes of white snow, broken highway, and skeletal buildings, each hop carrying her miles across the wasteland. The last jump dropped her onto solid ground with a soft crunch.

Joanna straightened and looked around. She stood in the courtyard of her base, and rows upon rows of her shipping containers surrounded her, stacked and lined up in orderly columns, their painted doors bright against the snow. Smoke rose from chimneys. People hurried between buildings carrying tools and crates, and somewhere nearby a hammer rang steadily against metal. Children’s laughter drifted from beyond the

containers.

The base looked like it was flourishing.

Joanna let out a slow breath, and for the first time in days, she sighed in relief.

Noah and Virginia spotted her first, breaking into a jog across the courtyard.

you’re back!” Noah called, waving.

Virginia reached her a step ahead, grinning. “Finally. It’s been way too quiet around here.”

Joanna smiled, some of the tension from the frozen road melting out of her shoulders. “Good to see you both. How’ve things been?”-

“Actually-” Virginia held up her hand, and a small chunk of the packed snow beneath them cracked and rose, hovering awkwardly before it dropped again with a plop. “I awakened an earth type ability. Still figuring it out. It’s not much yet, but Levi says it’ll come.”

“That’s incredible,” Joanna said, genuinely pleased. “We’ll get you proper training time.”

Noah rocked back on his heels, glancing sideways at Virginia before speaking. “Dante’s been kind of down since you left, by the way. Don’t say much, but you can tell.”

–

Joanna’s chest tightened faintly. “I’ll go see him. After I check in with Jolie and the team – I want to know where things stand first.”

They fell into step together, boots crunching over packed snow as they made their way toward the cafeteria. Noah filled the silence readily, clearly eager to catch her up.

“Everyone’s settled in good. Levi’s been on top of everything – patrols going out regularly, and he’s actually gotten some of the no-power survivors comfortable fighting zombies now. Didn’t think that’d happen so fast, honestly.”

“That’s a big deal,” Joanna said.

“Yeah, and once the worst of the winter let up, he started running everyone through training outside.” Noah pointed toward the container stacks ahead. “See that?”

Joanna followed his finger and stopped mid-step. Along the tops of the shipping containers, a line of figures jogged in formation, breath fogging in the cold wind, boots thudding against metal roofs.

Her eyebrows shot up. “Why are they running up there? In this wind?”

Virginia laughed, tucking her hands into her sleeves. “Levi’s orders. Says it builds character. Also doubles them as lookouts along the perimeter while they’re up there-figured why waste the view.”

Joanna huffed a short laugh, shaking her head slowly. “Oh. Nice.”

“Actually, Levi’s not up here,” Noah said. “He’s downstairs in the tunnels with Jolie.”

Joanna glanced at him. “The tunnels? Why would they be down there?”

Noah shrugged. “Not sure exactly. Something about the supply stores, maybe checking the escape route reinforcements. Jolie’s been down there most of the morning.”

Virginia picked up the thread easily, chattering about one of the earth-ability trainees who’d nearly collapsed a support beam his first week digging, and how Levi had nearly had a heart attack watching it happen. Joanna listened with half an ear, nodding along, while she raised a hand now and then to wave at familiar faces – a woman hanging laundry between two containers, a pair of kids darting past with a
