Aleast I’m not tied up.” Jolie’s voice came through, steadier now, though still edged with fear. “Boss, feeling around, but there’s no opening anywhere. Some patches of dirt, but it’s mostly rock. Like boxed
in.”
Joanna’s eyes swept down the slope of the ridge below her, the snow-packed rubble at its base. Ackslide would explain the rock, the dirt, being sealed in – but not the distance. “Jolie, was there a rock shit Tell me everything you remember, even the small stuff.”
“I remember walking up to check on the noise,” Jolie said, voice tightening with the effort of recalling “Bushes moving, like before. Then… a sound. Something moving fast, close. My head went foggy out of nowhere. Then nothing. Just black, until now.”
Joanna looked down the ridge again, calculating. Nearly a mile separated where the guard had last seen Jolie collapse and where the watch was currently marking her location. If it had simply been a rockslide at the spot she fell, none of this would make sense. Someone or something – had moved her first.
Boss, Jolie said suddenly, a thread of hope in her voice, I can send vines out. I’ll push them through the rock and dirt, break a path. You can follow it back to me.

Joanna felt a rush of relief at the plan. “Good thinking. Let’s do that.” She reached for the mind link immediately. Raven — tell Levi to send patrols to the base of the ridge, directly below where I am now. Jolie’s trapped somewhere down there. Tell them to look for moving vines breaking the surface. It’s her. Get Dante’s crew scanning that
area too.
On it, Raven’s voice replied instantly.
Word spread fast – Levi barking orders to the men gathering below, patrols fanning out along the base of the ridge, eyes fixed on the snow and rock for any sign of movement. Overhead, Dante’s crew banked sharply, wings cutting through the gray sky as they angled toward the search zone. Uncle Nate scanned the slope beside Joanna, wind curling faintly around his hands, ready to clear snow the moment they spotted something.
Everyone moved with purpose now, the search finally narrowing toward an answer.
Bubbles growled low, ears pricking sharply. “Boss! I think I hear something!” And with that, he launched himself down the rocky slope in a blur of grey-striped fur, moving with startling agility for something roughly the size and shape of a mountain lion that had swallowed a bear cub whole.
Boss, Jolie’s voice crackled through the link, tight with effort. My vines are poking through!
“Wiggle them as much as you can,” Joanna called back, already moving down after Bubbles. “Give me something to see.”
Boss, some of the cave’s collapsing! Hurry!
A minute later, Bubbles let out a sharp hiss from somewhere below. “Boss! Over here!”
Joanna left Uncle Nate to scramble down the rest of the slope and teleported straight to Bubbles instead. She found him crouched low, eyes huge, one massive paw swatting furiously at a thin green vine poking up through a crack in the rock.

“Stop that, Bubbles!”
ears flattened guiltily. “I can’t help it. It’s instinct.”

Joanna rolled her eyes and, without ceremony, tossed him straight into her space to get him out ofAble way. She dropped to her knees beside the vine. “Jolie. I’m going to tug on it. Tell me if you can feel how far I am from you.”
Below, she could see Levi already leading a group up the slope, shovels in hand alongside a handful of low- level earth ability users, moving fast despite the incline.
Joanna gave the vine a firm tug.
I feel you, Boss, Jolie said immediately, voice thin with relief. You’re a few feet to the side of me. Maybe fifteen feet down.
The vine twitched, curling slightly to point off to Joanna’s left. She followed it, scrambling over loose rock until she spotted a second thin tendril wriggling weakly out of a gap between two boulders.
“Jolie – is this one closer?”
A cough crackled through the link. That one’s to the side of me. But it’s deep -seven, maybe eight feet in.
By then Levi and his men had reached her, breathing hard from the climb, and Uncle Nate arrived seconds later, wind still curling faintly around his palms from clearing snow on the way up.
“There,” Joanna said, pointing to the gap between the boulders. “She’s under there, at least seven feet down. Dig.”
The earth ability users didn’t wait for further instruction – hands pressed flat against the rock, and the ground responded, boulders shuddering and grinding as they were coaxed apart, loosened from the earth that had locked them in place. Levi’s men followed behind with shovels, clearing away the broken rubble and packed dirt as it came free, working in a steady, practiced rhythm despite the cold burning in their lungs.
