Chapter 345 More Mutated Animals Are Surfacing

Finished

Before anyone could scatter for the evening, Joanna held up a hand. “One more thing before we call it, want to start getting Titan and Dante proper mutated animal cores.”

A few curious looks turned her way, and she continued. “As the frost keeps easing up – especially with the earthquakes coming more mutated animals are going to start surfacing. That’s not just a threat’s an opportunity. Cores from true mutated animals help develop other mutated animals. Growth, instNT, sometimes even speech.” She glanced sideways at the table. “Bubbles learned to talk from eating a steady diet of mutated rats before I even found him. It wasn’t training. It was the cores.”

Every head in the room turned, almost in unison, toward the far end of the table – where Mr. Bubbles lay sprawled on his side, fully unconscious, one enormous paw draped over the edge, snoring in slow, rumbling breaths with a small puddle of drool steadily collecting beneath his open mouth.

The room fell into a brief, complicated silence, everyone clearly recalibrating their mental image of “The Lord of Destruction” against the fifty-pound drooling mess currently passed out on the meeting table.

Levi ed his throat first, dragging his eyes away. “So… we want Titan and Dante eating things like that.”

ing rats specifically,” Joanna clarified, fighting the urge to laugh at the look on everyone’s faces. “But mutated cores, safely harvested, fed to them over time. If Titan and Dante take the cores the way abbles did, it could accelerate things for both of them. Strength, senses, maybe even full speech instead of ast cooing and barking that Raven has to translate.”

Raven’s eyes lit up at that. “Dante would talk on his own? He’d never let anyone forget it.”

“That’s the hope,” Joanna said. “Titan too. Imagine actually understanding him without needing Raven in the room every time.”

Levi nodded slowly, expression settling back into something more serious. “Makes sense. If more mutated animals are surfacing anyway, we might as well be strategic about which ones we bring down and what we do with them after.”

“Exactly,” Joanna said. “So from here on, if patrols spot anything mutated animal, not plant, that’s a different conversation – I want it reported immediately. If it can be taken down safely, we harvest the core. No unnecessary risks chasing something down, but if the opportunity’s there, we take it.”

Raven grinned despite the tension in the room. “Titan’s going to be thrilled. He’s very competitive about, well, everything.”

Noah huffed a short laugh. “Not more competitive than Bubbles is about being fierce and majestic, apparently.”

As if summoned by his own name in passing, Bubbles let out a particularly loud snore, one paw twitching mid-dream, and the puddle of drool grew slightly wider.

Joanna sighed, unable to keep the small smile off her face despite everything else weighing on her. “Alright. Log any mutated sightings same day, like I said before. We regroup here at first light and head out together.” She glanced around the room one final time. “Get some rest tonight. Tomorrow’s going to be a long day.”

The meeting broke up not long after, everyone filing out with quiet nods and the particular kind of exhaustion that came from too much bad news in one day. Joanna lingered behind just long enough to

scht was waiting.

The bowl Willow set in front of her was a deep, rich red, steam curling up off the surface, chunks beet and potato swimming alongside shreds of cabbage in a broth that smelled faintly of dill and something warm underneath it all. Joanna took a spoonful, expecting something decent.

She was not prepared for how genuinely good it was.

“Willow,” Joanna said, after her second spoonful, “this is incredible.”

Willow beamed, practically glowing with pride. “Right? The beets came out perfect this batch. I know the greenhouse setup was worth it.”

Joanna took another bite, savoring it, something settling warm in her chest that had nothing to do with the soup’s temperature. A full bowl of fresh vegetable stew, grown and harvested in the dead of an arctic winter, in a greenhouse her own people had built with their own hands. It still amazed her, every time, just how far they’d come.

“Willow,” Joanna said, setting her spoon down for a moment, “I want us to start collaborating with Westridge and Dillon once the frost clears. Teaching some of their plant-powered survivors how to actually grow food properly, the way you’ve got it running here – it’d help them enormously.”
