Rewrite the Apocalypse dream (by Dee Cari) novel Chapter 52

Chapter 52 Final Prepping Phase

The next seven days dissolved into a blur of aching muscles, bruised skin, and the relentless, high-speed hum of hard drives. Joanna had promised a brutal routine, and she delivered without mercy.

Every morning at five o’clock sharp, the chilly warehouse floor transformed into a grueling combat academy. Jake proved to be a quiet, uncompromising instructor. He didn’t coach like a gym personal trainer; he taught them how to survive, disable, and kill with absolute efficiency.

“Again,” Jake’s voice would ring out, flat and steady, over the sound of heavy breathing and the sharp slap of limbs hitting the mats.

Under his watchful eye, their progress was measured in bruises and split-second reactions. Joanna quickly learned to channel her newly enhanced stamina and speed into precise, lethal joint locks and rapid knife transitions. She held off on her strength ability though since it seemed to stay stagnant at level 1. Joanna knew she needed zombie cores to upgrade it so she could just wait. Also, with her space allowing for teleportation, she felt confident she could get out of most sticky situations. Beside her, Jolie traded her hesitant stances for aggressive, low- center-of-gravity blocks, learning how to swing the heavy, barbed-wire-wrapped metal bats with terrifying, skull-cracking momentum. Most of her body lost that soft appearance and rounded lines and now Jolie looked toned with much more muscle definition.

But it was Raven who became the ghost on the mat. What the eleven-year-old lacked in raw, muscle-bound strength, she made up for in pure agility. She learned to slip beneath a guard like shadow, driving a custom steel spearpoint into vital targets with a cold focus that made even Jake offer a rare nod of approval. By day six, their sparring sessions were no longer clumsy, hesitant collisions. They had become a fast, synchronized dance of blocks, strikes, and immediate recoveries.

The afternoons and evenings offered no reprieve. When they weren’t bruising each other on the mats, they were sorting and packing fresh produce harvested from Joanna’s pocket dimension into Jolie’s specialized, airtight crates. And when the physical work finally ended, the digital archive grew by terabytes in the dark. Raven and Jolie sat side-by-side, systematically draining the internet of humanity’s collective knowledge, history, and culture before the servers went dark forever.

On the morning of the eighth day, the grueling routine finally broke. They had just finished a brutal three-hour close-quarters drill, everyone panting and drenched in sweat, when Jake’s phone buzzed sharply against a nearby weapon crate.

He wiped the sweat from his forehead with a towel, picked up the device, and read the encrypted message. A rare, satisfied look crossed his hard features.

“The fabrication foreman just pinged me,” Jake said, turning to Joanna. “The off-grid engineering firm finished the final structural welds on all the shelters. They passed the pressure

and load-bearing tests. The first six specialized containers we are using for the properties are ready as well as the remaining conatiners.”

Joanna’s eyes sharpened, the exhaustion of the morning instantly evaporating. It meant time to plan another trip. This time Joanna was taking the whole team.

The first six containers weren’t just standard steel shipping boxes. Modified directly from Jake’s revised blueprints, these three specialized pairs of containers were fully kitted out as subterranean rest stations. They had shifted the medical bays to the center bulkheads, leaving room for recessed, fold-down bunks that maximized physical clearance for emergency procedures and tactical storage. Wrapped in heavy-duty, military-grade insulation and built with integrated ventilation paths, they were designed to keep the group completely hidden, scent-proof, and safe from the undead beneath the surface.

Once buried in the three massive, hidden underground craters they had prepped at the three isolated properties, these bunkers would serve as their secure sanctuaries along the hazardous road to Evercrest.

She looked at her team, seeing the determination written on each of their faces. “Team, this is our final prepping phase. I am going to sign off on everything then we plan to go to the properties and bury them. Jake you are with me, let’s go!”

When they arrived at the fabrication facility, the sheer scale of the engineering firm’s work became real. Resting on concrete blocks in a secluded loading yard stood the six modified shipping containers. Externally, they looked like weathered, industrial steel boxes, perfectly camouflaged to avoid suspicion. But as Jake and Joanna walked through the reinforced hatches, the reality was breathtaking.

Jake ran a calloused hand over a seam weld inside the first bunker unit. “Double-beaded, hermetically sealed,” he murmured, a rare tone of genuine respect in his voice. “They used the high-impact marine alloy I requested. Even if the earth shifts above these, the structural integrity won’t fail.”
