“Now,” Joanna said, her eyes flashing with sudden urgency. “We have less than ten minutes before the police dispatch gets here. Jolie go turn on the lights. Raven, Step back.”
Jolie and Raven quickly retreated toward the exit. Joanna stood in the center of the massive floor, extending her hand. Her mind connected with her vast, upgraded pocket dimension.
With a silent, invisible pull, the air vibrated. One by one, the massive, multi-ton shipping containers vanished into thin air, sucked instantly into the safety of her spiritual space. 40 of the shipping containers disappeared in a matter of seconds.
Joanna left exactly one container sitting in the corner-an empty, unmodified shell they had purchased earlier. To any investigator, or thug, it would look like the thieves had only targeted a single, ordinary shipping container, leaving no trace of how many they had actually possessed.
“Let’s go,” Joanna said, turning toward the exit.
By the time the blue and red lights of the police cruisers began to paint the dark exterior of the warehouse, they stood outside the main entrance, waiting calmly as the local officers pulled up and killed their sirens.
The two responding officers stepped out of their patrol cars, handguns loose in their holsters, but their tension eased when they saw two young women, and an eleven-year-old girl standing cooperatively under the dim security light.
“We heard a racket inside while we were checking on our storage lease,” Joanna explained smoothly to the lead officer, her voice a perfect blend of shaken civilian and cooperative citizen. “When we went to investigate, these two men lunged at us with crowbars. We didn’t have a choice but to defend ourselves.”
Inside, the two thugs were just beginning to groan, slowly blinking awake as the officers cuffed them. Both men looked utterly bewildered, touching their bruised jaws and tender throats, completely unable to comprehend how they had been systematically dismantled by a teenage girl and a child. When questioned by the deputies, the men could only mumble incoherent, groggy half-truths about shadows and blunt objects, unsure of exactly how they had ended up flat on the concrete.
The confusion cleared up the moment the deputy ran their prints through the squad car’s database.
“Well, I’ll be,” the lead officer said, walking back over to Joanna with a look of genuine admiration. “You ladies just did our department a massive favor. These two are wanted for a string of high-end commercial burglaries and heavy-equipment thefts. They’ve been slipping past us for months.”

The second officer nodded in agreement, tipping his hat toward Jolie and Raven. “Incredible work. Most people would have frozen up, but you three handled yourselves like absolute pros. Congratulations on keeping this place secure.”
After taking their formal statements and filling out the necessary paperwork, the police wrapped up their investigation. Thanks to Joanna’s quick thinking, the officers didn’t think twice about the single, lonely shipping container sitting in the corner of the massive, otherwise empty warehouse.
By the time the paperwork was finalized and the tow trucks arrived for the suspects’ vehicle, the clock was pushing 12:00 AM. Jolie even checked with Jake to give him an update.
The drive back to the Aurora apartments was quiet, the high-octane adrenaline of the fight finally fading into heavy, bone-deep exhaustion. When they slipped through the front door, Jake was waiting in the living room, a quiet sigh of relief escaping his chest as he took in their safe, unharmed return. Joanna gave him a silent, reassuring nod-the mission had been a flawless success.
Without a word, Jake took Raven upstairs to his apartment and the three of them collapsed into their respective beds, the soothing silence of the apartment wrapping around them as they drifted off to sleep.
The next morning, a rare, heavy silence blanketed the apartment. For the first time in weeks, the 4:30 AM alarm did not blare. By silent, mutual agreement, morning training was canceled, allowing their battered bodies to finally recover.
By nine o’clock, the rich, savory aroma of sizzling bacon and toasted sourdough drifted through the hallway.
When Joanna and Jolie finally stumbled out of their rooms, rubbing the sleep from their eyes, they found a domestic sanctuary waiting for them. Jake stood at the stove expertly flipping golden eggs in a cast-iron skillet, while Raven proudly plated a towering mountain of crispy bacon.
“Look who finally rejoined the living,” Jake said, gesturing to the table with his spatula. “Sit. You earned a recovery day.”
Once they all dug in, Jake leaned back, his sharp eyes locking onto Joanna. “Alright, now that you’ve had some coffee, I want the details. What happened?”
Jolie practically vibrated with residual adrenaline. “Joanna called it perfectly! Two guys crawled through the window with crowbars. The second Joanna gave the word, we just clicked. I dropped low, took out the first guy’s knee, and knocked him cold.”
Jake’s eyes shifted to Raven, a proud warmth in his gaze. “And you?”
“The other guy tried to swing at Jolie,” Raven shrugged, chewing a piece of bacon with cool
