Chapter 59 You were right about all of it

That evening, the team gathered around the dining table for a rapid-fire briefing.

“We are dividing and conquering starting tomorrow,” Joanna commanded, her voice sharp and authoritative. “Logistics first. Room assignments: Allen, you’re bunking with Jake. Rachel, you’re with Jolie. No arguments.”

Jolie shot a quick, victorious look at a flushed Allen, who simply cleared his throat and looked away.

“Tomorrow morning, we meet first to train and fight. Then we work.” Joanna continued, looking at Rachel, Jolie, and Raven. “You three are on seafood duty. I want live stock-fish tanks loaded with live salmon, cod, sardines, crab, shrimp, and whatever else we can source. I will sweep it all in my space. Make sure the filtration systems are transport-ready.”

She then turned her gaze to the boys. “Allen, Jake. You’re on utilities. I need you securing heavy-duty water tanks, portable showers, industrial generators, and portable solar energy units. I have enough for us but our team is getting bigger so we just need more.”

Allen nodded, his sarcastic edge replaced by a focused, analytical stare.

“Now, the timeline,” Joanna said, leaning forward. The room grew dead silent. “In my dream, the apocalypse hits without warning. It starts in exactly one month, on Thanksgiving Day. When the country sits down for dinner, the grid collapses.”

A heavy weight settled over the room. One month.

“All of us have been quietly buying up gasoline and diesel for a few months so you will join in. We go all over town and get only a few canisters at a time so we don’t draw attention. Jolie will tell you which stations to go to. We also have a few sturdy vehicles, but it’s not enough for the whole team when the panic starts,” Joanna said. She looked directly at Allen. “I need more heavy-duty off road trucks. I am sending you a list of car dealerships. Find out which one stocks the most vehicles. I will hit that place first after the apocalypse begins.”

Allen let out a dry, confident smirk, finally back in his element. “Why not skip the dealerships and look for the shipments coming into port. I can hack into the regional shipping manifests and find exactly what port or transit depot is holding the military-grade or commercial fleet vehicles. Plus,” he added, rolling up his sleeves, “I actually know how to hotwire and fix them when we get there. Consider it done.”

One week of relentless preparation flew by. The apartment had become a staging ground of schematics, off-grid water filtration specs, and maps of the regional shipping yards Allen was busy hacking.

On a rainy Thursday evening everyone else was upstairs in Jake’s apartment and suddenly, a

sharp, heavy knock echoed through the door. It wasn’t the rhythm of any of her team members.

Joanna walked to the door, checking the peephole. Her heart did a sudden, violent flip against her ribs. Standing in the dim hallway, clad in a dark overcoat with rain dripping from his jawline, was Julian Hawthorne.

She unlocked the deadbolt and pulled the door open.

Julian didn’t wait for an invitation. He stepped inside, bringing the cold scent of rain and expensive cologne with him. He closed the door behind him, turning his dark, suffocating gaze entirely on her. The sheer, magnetic weight of his presence instantly shrunk the room.

“You were right,” Julian said, his deep, gravelly baritone vibrating straight through the quiet apartment. “About all of it.”

Joanna leaned against the wall, crossing her arms, letting a slow, knowing smile play on her lips. “I told you I was.”

Julian stepped closer, trapping her space just like he had on the plane. The raw heat radiating off him made her pulse race, but she didn’t flinch.

“My grandmother’s ashes were given to me…” he murmured, his eyes searching hers with a dangerous intensity. “She wants her ashes on the mountain in her hometown. Everything fell into place like you said. And John…” Julian’s jaw clenched, a feral flicker igniting in his eyes. “The bastard was already routing proprietary tech to Elliot’s shell companies. I caught him red- handed. I let him think he was winning, pulled my assets, and liquidated everything.”

“And the company?” Joanna asked softly.

“I walked away,” Julian said, though the loss of his empire clearly cut his pride. He reached out, his gloved fingers gently catching her chin, forcing her to look directly into his burning gaze. “I converted three billion dollars into survival gear, medicine, heavy firearms, and solar freezers. They’re already being routed to the coordinates you gave me. I bought the land nearby with a farmhouse. I am not going to lie, I feel like I am spiraling right now.”

Joanna swallowed, the proximity of his chest sending a sharp jolt of adrenaline down her spine. “And the emeralds?”

A low, intrigued smirk finally broke Julian’s cold mask. He reached into his coat pocket and pulled out a small, velvet pouch, tipping it slightly to reveal a handful of raw, stunningly green emeralds. They gleamed like miniature power sources in the dim apartment light.

“I have a bank vault full of them now,” Julian whispered, his face inches from hers. “But you still haven’t told me why.”

“Because when the world ends next month, those stones will be payment for me to keep your
