Chapter 86 The old school speaker comm

Jonna raised a-hand, pausing the chatter and motioning for everyone to quiet down. “Look, while we start fixing up the pens and organizing the pasture, I need you all to help me brainstorm a list of everything I might have missed. Think of anything-tools, comfort items, essentials. Write it down and put it in the group text so we can grab it before the stores completely dry up.”
Allen immediately raised his hand, a sarcastic grin playing on his lips. “Radios. Definitely more short-wave and long-range radios. How else are we going to communicate well out there when the cell towers inevitably morph into giant metal lightning rods? The satellite phones you got are great, Boss, but more backup is always better.”
Joanna nodded, appreciating the practical thought. “Good. Put it in the chat.”
As Uncle Nate, Jake, Julian, and Allen began measuring out the fencing, the women headed back toward the stone villa to start organizing the indoor layout.
Stepping into the grand entry-way, Raven’s sharp eyes caught a sleek, metallic box mounted flush against the stone wall. It featured a small mesh grate and a single brass button. She pointed at it, tilting her head. “What’s that? It looks like an old school speaker comm.”
Joanna blinked, staring at the wall. “Honestly, I have no idea. I never noticed it before. It must have unlocked with the level ten upgrade.”
Rachel, never one to hesitate, walked straight up to the device and firmly pressed the button. “Hello? Can anyone hear me?”
Joanna froze, stunned right on the spot. Her eyes widened in absolute shock as she stared at Rachel. “Wait! I just heard you directly in my head. It didn’t come out loud, it was just inside my mind.”
Rachel lifted her brows up in surprise, releasing the button. “Really? No sound came out of the box down here.”
Jolie’s eyes lit up with excitement. “Really? Is it like a direct speaker to your thoughts? Let me try!” She scrambled over, shoved Rachel playfully out of the way, and slammed her thumb onto the talk button. “Testing, one, two! Testing! Can you hear me, Captain?”
Joanna nodded fast, her face flushed with excitement. “Yes! I heard you perfectly clear. It’s like a telepathic intercom. I wonder if I can speak back to you the same way.”
Joanna focused her mind, trying to project her voice toward the wall unit, but nothing came through the metallic mesh. The villa remained completely silent.
“Nothing,” Jolie said, shaking her head. “Maybe it’s a one-way street?”
“Wait,” Joanna murmured, a sudden theory striking her. “Let me leave the space and try from the outside. If the system matrix connects my mind to this building, it might bridge the gap between dimensions.”
An instant later, in a silent flash of light, Joanna vanished from the villa and appeared back in the tight, quiet upstairs apartment. Taking a deep breath, she closed her eyes, focused her mind entirely on the anchor of her pocket dimension, and spoke aloud into the empty room. “Hello? Can you guys hear me?”
Inside the stone villa, Joanna’s voice suddenly echoed out of the wall speaker, crystal clear and perfectly

The girls burst into shouts of joy, their muffled excitement rippling across the dimensional boundary. “Yes, Bos, we hear you loud and clear!” Jolie said while speaking into the speaker com again.
An instant later, Joanna returned in the space, appearing out of thin air and making everyone jump.
“Whoa Joanna, give us a heads up first before you appear like that. Scared a year off my life,” Rachel muttered, clutching her chest.
Joanna was just standing there grinning, thoroughly amused by the success of the test. “Sorry about tha Joanna said.
Rachel waved her off, letting out a breath while getting herself under control.
Joanna turned to the group, clapping her hands together to get their attention. “Hey, let’s split up and look around for more speakers in the villa. If it’s a full intercom system, there should be more of these scattered around the house.”
“On it,” Rachel said, immediately jogging toward the basement stairs while Raven and Jolie headed up to the higher levels.
They all went off to search, exploring the empty stone rooms and corridors. A minute later, Jolie’s voice came drifting into Joanna’s mind, clear and distinct. Boss, there is a speaker on the second floor, right at the end of the hallway.
