Chapter 91 Remember, aim for the head!
suppressed laughter didn’t last long As the group moved past the final row of familiar spartment complexes the air changed growing heavy with the metallic tang of old blood and rot. The eerie art that had masked Mrs Klein’s sprint now felt suffocating Joanna kept her hatchet raised, her eyes darting between the shadowed interiors of stalled sedans and shattered storefronts
A low wet scratching sound echoed from a dark alleyway up ahead.
Joanna raised her left hand signaling an immediate halt Behind her the team froze instant their previous embarrassment evaporating into rigid tension Stumbling out from the alley and the shadows of a nearby transit bus four figures emerged into the pale afternoon light
They still looked entirely human, but they were unmistakably dead. Their skin was a sickly bruised grey and their eyes were glassy and vacant, completely devoid of life Leading the small group were two construction workers, their neon safety vests stained with dark, dried blood Behind them lumped a female bus driver in a torn uniform, followed by a middle-aged man whose expensive business suit was shredded at the shoulder revealing pale torn flesh beneath
They didn’t shuffle The moment they spotted the group, their limbs twitched with an unnatural frenzied speed and they sprinted forward with a mindless, starving rage

Chapter 91 Remember aim for the head!
Finished
Just a few yards away, the struggle with the final construction worker turned perilous. The massive, grey-
med monster lunged with surprising force, catching Julian off guard. Julian’s boots skidded on the loose gravel, and he stumbled backward, losing his footing and dropping his aluminum bat. The zombie snarled, throwing its full weight forward to pin him to the ground.
Before Uncle Nate could clumsily swing his hatchet to intervene, Joanna acted.
Utilizing the spatial magic of her pocket dimension, she instantly vanished from her spot next to Raven and Titan. A split second later, she materialized directly behind the lunging construction worker. With a fierce fluid motion, she drove her survival hatchet straight into the back of the monster’s head. The creature instantly went limp, collapsing heavily onto the pavement just inches away from Julian’s chest.
Joanna stood over the fallen body, her chest heaving as she ripped her hatchet free. She extended a hand to pull a thoroughly shaken Julian back to his feet. The street fell dead silent once more, save for the heavy panting of the team and the low, frightened whimper of Titan.
The sudden stillness of the street was broken only by the heavy panting of the team. Everyone stood frozen, staring at the four dead bodies scattered across the asphalt as the grim reality of the apocalypse finally sank in.
Joanna lowered her hatchet, completely unfazed and barely out of breath. “Everyone, regroup,” she called out calmly. “Check yourselves for injuries.”
The group pulled back into a tight circle. Jolie was still pale and shaken, but she gave a weak nod to show she wasn’t hurt. Julian retrieved his dropped aluminum bat, his face a mix of awe and lingering adrenaline as he stood next to Uncle Nate.
“Incredible job, everyone,” Joanna said, offering a rare smile. “You held the line and looked out for each other. That was a textbook first engagement.”
She gestured toward the fallen construction worker. “But don’t get comfortable. Look at their skin-they just turned, which means they are still weak. As the virus settles, they will get a lot faster, stronger, and smarter. Consider this your warm-up.”
A heavy silence fell over the group as the weight of her warning sank in.
“The good news is that everyone made it,” Joanna added, looking protectively at Raven and Titan. “We took zero casualties, and we know we can trust each other. That’s a huge win.”
Though the team was still a little rattled, Joanna’s calm confidence anchored them. They took a collective breath, adjusted their grips on their bats, shovels, and hatchets, and moved forward down the road.
