Chapter 575 One Last Stand
It took about three minutes.
Steven landed before the assembled squad, the two girls with him.
By now everyone was standing ready, braced for battle.
Peter and the others had all put on their battle armor.
Every one of them looked ready to march to their deaths without flinching.
“Vice Captain, let us go!” Peter said, stepping forward.
Steven swept a look over them all.

On the way over, he’d already reviewed the mission briefing. This time, again, it was in a civilian district inside the city, with their squad tasked to defend a single stretch of ground.
But Orroux’s beast tide, compared to Oakridge’s, was a far harder fight.
And Steven understood, too, that this might be the last battle they ever fought together.
Steven looked to Alan. “Captain Greenwood, what are you thinking?”
Alan said, “Orroux’s defense of the city is a very different thing from Oakridge’s. Here, the beasts start at level 2 and level 3-level 1 beasts are just cannon fodder, and there are plenty of level 4s and level 5s.
“The danger level is too high. Truthfully, I’m not all that willing to let them take the risk.”
Peter and the others wore looks of helpless frustration. This last battle-they truly wanted to fight it shoulder to shoulder.
Honestly, there was even a shamefully selfish thought buried in their heart, this beast-tide assault almost felt like it had been laid on just for them.
In a way, it was a stroke of luck-and in the face of such danger, a cruel kind of helplessness too.
Alan said, “I want to hear what you think. If you agree, we can let them go.”
At that, Peter and the others turned hopeful eyes on him.
Steven looked them over, and deep in those hopeful eyes, there was in fact a trace of regret.
Steven understood-if the group wasn’t together for this fight, they might really go home

carrying that regret for good.
At the thought, a small smile surfaced on Steven’s face.
“Then let’s go!”
In an instant, a flash of surprised joy lit the eyes of Peter and the others.
Steven explained, “Without them, we’d have to split off three people to guard the Divine Barrier stakes-which piles the pressure on us, too.

“But with Peter and the other four, they can take the Divine Barrier stakes off our hands, and we can fight at full strength.
