“Me?” Jensen’s voice was a dark vibration that seemed to rattle the very bones in my chest.
I let the silence hang between us for a while before I answered.
“Yes, Jensen. You,” I said, my voice finally finding a steady, cold edge. “I regret the five years of birthdays, the anniversaries you forgot, and the small gestures I made while waiting for a word from you. A sign. A proposal. Anything.”
I gestured toward the cardboard boxes lining the room… “And now, you offer a mate bond like it’s a business transaction? You think a title and a hundred–million–dollar villa can erase the silver whip? The cellar? I’d rather have died in that cellar than spend another second loving a man like you.”
For a heartbeat, he faltered..
His pupils widened, his wolf stirring beneath the surface.
But the moment of vulnerability was gone as quickly as it came.
He lunged, his hand snapping around my wrist with so much force.
He slammed me back against the bookshelf.
Pain flared white–hot through my spine, and I gasped as he gripped my chin, forcing me to meet his golden, predatory gaze.
His thumb pressed directly into the cut on my cheek, smearing the blood.
“From the moment I saved you, Natalie, you’ve been mine,” he rasped, his breath hot against my lips. “The translations, the archives, the nights in this house… you are part of me. You are

For a fleeting second, the old, desperate part of the wanted to believe him.
Then, his phone chimed.
Sharon’s ringtone.
He let go of me so fast I nearly stumbled.
He answered, and I heard Quincy’s frantic voice bleeding through the speaker – something about Sharon waking up and threatening that she would rather die than face the humiliation

“Tell Sharon I’ll handle it,” Jensen said, his eyes narrowing into slits. “She just needs to stay alive.”
He hung up and turned to me, his face losing all warmth.
“Get your coat. We’re going to the Council station. You’re deleting those backups tonight.”
“No.” I said.
Jensen tilted his head, a dangerous smile touching his lips.
“I noticed you packed your notebooks, Natalie. The ancient texts you decoded. The only keys to languages no one else can read. Do you know what happens if I throw them into the pack’s fire pit?”
The air left my lungs.
Those notebooks were my soul
My only proof that I existed outside of him.
Slap.
The sound cracked through the room.
My hand stung, and Jensen’s head snapped to the side.
I waited for the explosion but he just looked at me, his cheek reddening.
“Come to the station,” he said softly. “Delete the files, and your notebooks leave here untouched. I don’t want to destroy your work, Natalie… but I will to save Sharon.”
A bitter, broken laugh escaped me.
“You win, Jensen. You always do.”
I grabbed my coat, my movements robotic as I followed him out of the villa and into the torrential rain.
Waiting at the curb was the black pack SUV.
The driver stood by the door, head bowed, holding it open for us.
Jensen shoved me toward the back seat and climbed in beside me.

“The Council station,” Jensen barked at the driver. “Fast.”
The driver nodded, shifted into gear, and the tires spat gravel as we roared out of the driveway.
Jensen didn’t look at me; he sat with his arms crossed, staring straight ahead, his fury radiating off him in waves.
The driver was pushing the vehicle too hard for the weather.
We hit the main road, speed climbing as he tried to meet Jensen’s demand for speed.
“He’s going too fast,” I whispered, clutching the door handle.
Jensen didn’t even turn his head. “He’s doing what he’s told.”

I saw the headlights of the oncoming car first… The driver wrenched the wheel, a sharp gasp escaping his lips as the brakes locked up on the slick asphalt. It was too late.
My head snapped forward, the airiness of gravity vanishing as the SUV smashed into another
car.
Glass shattered, raining down on me like diamonds.
I felt the seatbelt bite into my chest, felt the world spinning.
The side window disintegrated against my temple.
Everything went silent.
Through the ringing in my ears, I felt the car seule.
I was gasping, my hands locked around my knees, blood trickling into my eye.
Jensen was beside me.
